We are trying to determine the best dates for the XIV International
Conference on Historical Linguistics to be held in August 1999
in Vancouver, Canada.

The dates being considered are August 9-13 or August 16-20.
If you know of any other conferences on related topics planned
for either of these dates or if you know of other reasons
for preferring one set of dates over another, could you please
let me know.

Dear colleagues,

In December of 1996, the Board of Language Australia made a policy
decision to move all of Language Australia's IT functions to its
national office in Canberra.  This included the various Web sites, and
most particularly, the LA Database System, which was developed,
maintained, and hosted at the Centre for Language Teaching and
Research at the University of Queensland.

A significant part of the CLTR was allied strongly with Language
Australia (formerly known as the National Language and Literacy
Institute of Australia), and was known as the NLLIA Language and
Technology Centre, or LATTICE.

Since early in 1990, the CLTR (and LATTICE) was the primary provider
of Internet access, computer training and database development for the
NLLIA.

However, Language Australia's Board decision to move the databases,
coupled with the failure of the Board to provide any other project
based workplan funding or specific purpose contract funding means that
LATTICE has no funding from Language Australia to operate in 1997.

The Board's decision has meant there would be the movement and
eventual closure of the database system and the Web pages - which we
have maintained on a transitional arrangement basis for the last six
weeks.  However, the lack of any funding from Language Australia means
that we will also have to close down any client services which we have
provided to Language Australia.

As a result of this, all NLLIA-based Internet accounts based on our
server, Lingua, will terminate as of Friday, 14 February 1997.
Additionally, the list "nllia-l" will also terminate on Friday, 14
February 1997.

The IT manager at Language Australia's national office, Mr Fred
Pilcher, should be able to provide accounts where necessary, as well
as establishing a new 'nllia-l' group.  He can be reached on the email
address fpilcher at nllia.gov.au

That's the bad news.  The good news is that the CLTR continues to
maintain and develop a variety of World Wide Web applications for
language and literacy organisations and colleagues.  The CLTR's
academic program is also fully available for perusal on the World Wide
Web.

We will also continue to provide information on links, conferences,
and other relevant information relating to the overall applied
linguistics area, in Australia and overseas.

Subject:  Compilation of studies on South Asian linguistics

By now, many of you will have heard of the _Yearbook of South Asian
Languages and Linguistics_ (Chief Ed.: Rajendra Singh) which is to
appear next year by Sage Publications and you may also have received
calls for contributions, etc.

In addition to the many articles which will be included in the
Yearbook, the Yearbook will also include a compilation of studies on
South Asian linguistics between 1990 and 1996 from various regions of
the globe. I will be collecting the information on work done by
scholars of SA linguistics residing in Europe and, as time is quickly
running out, I would like to take this opportunity to request

       ALL SCHOLARS OF SOUTH ASIAN LINGUISTICS RESIDING IN EUROPE

to send me a list of their linguistic publications since 1990 for
inclusion in the Yearbook, so that the entries for Europe will be as
complete as possible. If the publication is not written in English,
please include an English translation of the title.

semantics, sociolinguistics, documentation of endangered languages,
etc., etc.) is welcome. Also, new teaching materials, reviews,
dissertations, habilitations -basically EVERYTHING concerning the
languages of Southa Asia - is welcome.
