                WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Lexical knowledge plays a major role in language understanding
systems, either natural or artificial. This claim is widely
accepted in the NLP community, as well as in theoretical
                linguistics and cognitive science.

From a cognitive point of view, lexical knowledge, and in
particular lexical semantics, has emerged as being a crucial
part of the language understanding process carried on by our
                cognitive system.
Moreover, the lexicon is not seen as a static and isolated
part of the cognitive architecture, but as a dynamic
structure, which includes both representations and processes
and is linked to other knowledge sources such as world
                knowledge, perceptual representations and pragmatic
                procedures.

On the other hand recent linguistic theories share the claim
that many syntactic and semantic properties find their
explanation in the structure of the lexicon. Such an
assumption explains the growing interest for new tools of
lexical description and for the mechanism of the interface
                between lexical semantics and syntax.

From a computational perspective, it has been proven that the
development of a large scale lexicon is the real bottleneck of
every NLP application. This means that issues about the
structure and the representation of lexical knowledge, as well
as its development and/or acquisition, are of main importance
                when building NLP systems.

This workshop aims at bringing the discussion on these topics:

                   * Which is the content of lexical semantic knowledge?
                   * Which is the structure of a cognitive plausible lexicon?
                   * Which are the links between lexical semantics and other
                     knowledge sources?
                   * Which properties of lexical representation contribute to
                     syntactic processes?
                   * Which are the advantages and disadvantages of different
                     representation formats?
                   * Which is the most suitable architecture for a
                     computational lexicon?
                   * Which processes interact with the lexicon and how?
