POST OF LECTURER/ASSISTANT LECTURER IN LINGUISTICS
DEPARTMENT OF LANGUAGE, LINGUISTICS & PHILOSOPHY, MONA.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for the post of
Lecturer/Assistant Lecturer in Linguistics, Department of Language,
Linguistics and Philosophy, The University of the West Indies, Mona.
Applicants should have postgraduate qualifications and a record of
research in Linguistics. Candidates should have interest and competence in
Linguistic Theory and in Applied Linguistics. The successful applicant
should be able to teach at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels
courses in Linguistic Theory and Applied Linguistics, with special
reference to language teaching/learning. Duties to be assumed by August 1,
1997 or as soon as possible thereafter.

GENERAL
The University of the West Indies is an independent university serving the

The University has campuses at Mona in Jamaica, St. Augustine in Trinidad
and Cave Hill in Barbados. The total student body which numbers
approximately 15,000 is distributed the three campuses. The Faculties at
Mona are Arts & Education, Medical Sciences, Pure and Applied Sciences,
and Social Sciences.
The University began teaching in 1948 as a University College affiliated
with the University of London, and became an independent university in
1962.

Teaching carried out in the Department of Language, Linguistics &
Philosophy:
The Department offers courses leading to the B.A. in Linguistics, and in
Linguistics combined with other subjects. At the postgraduate level,
candidates are accepted for the MA, MPhil and PhD degrees.

DUTIES OF THE APPOINTEE
The successful applicant would be required to teach courses in Linguistics
Theory as well as courses in applied Linguistics with special reference to
language teaching/learning at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels,
to conduct tutorial groups and seminars, and to assist with the examining
work of the Department, as the Head of the Department may direct. So far
as circumstances permit in the area of teaching, members of the academic
staff are given the opportunity to specialize and develop their own
interests within the limitations of the range of courses which may be on
offer at a given time.

RESEARCH
The University places a good deal of emphasis on research and publication
by members of staff, and the standard of performance in this area is one
of the chief factors taken into consideration when members of staff are
being considered for promotion.

APPOINTMENT
Appointment will normally be for three years in the first instance, with
eligibility for renewal.
