Dear colleagues,

In early December last year, Robert B. Lees, founder of the
departments of linguistics at the University of Illinois,
Urbana, and at Tel Aviv University, passed away following a
sudden stroke. Mercifully, he did not suffer at all. All those
who have known, admired and loved him will remember him not only
for his impressive achievements in the early days of generative
grammar, for his encyclopaedic knowledge, or for his uncanny
ability to bring into focus facts and arguments from a wide
diversity of disciplines, but also for his humanity and personal
warmth. We, his former colleagues and students will never forget
our personal and professional depth of gratitude to him. May he
rest in peace.

Alexander Grosu (for the Depat. of Linguistics at Tel Aviv
University)
