Subject:  LINGUIST Fellowships - Second Announcement


We are now soliciting applications for the 2 LINGUIST fellowships,
which will support student editors of LINGUIST in 1997-98.

Graduate student editors of LINGUIST get more than just monetary
support: they also have the opportunity to "listen in" daily on
professional linguistic discussions; they gain familiarity with all
phases of the Internet; and they acquire name recognition in the
discipline.  Please bring these fellowships to the attention of your
students.

In an effort to maintain the international character of the list, we
welcome applications from students outside the USA.  LINGUIST
fellowship holders must have a good command of written English and
must become degree-seeking students at either Texas A&M or Eastern
Michigan U.

Eastern Michigan U. offers a B.A. and M.A. in general linguistics.  It
is situated in Ypsilanti, MI (about 5 miles from Ann Arbor) in an
active linguistics community.  The LINGUIST fellow at EMU receives a
full tuition waiver (for 15 graduate credit hours per year) plus a
stipend of approximately $5000. Application deadline: March 15, 1997.

Texas A&M offers a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in English and is situated in
College Station, Texas.  The LINGUIST fellow at Texas A&M receives a
stipend of $5000 from the LINGUIST Development Fund plus approximately
$3000 from the Texas A&M English Dept.  The student pays his/her own
tuition.

                            ANNOUNCEMENT

Teaching Assistantship of French Language in Linguistics
Program

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics at
Syracuse University will likely have assistantships available in the
French Language Program for students enrolling in the fall '97
semester to begin the Master's degree program in Linguistics.
The MA degree in the Linguistics Program offers concentrations
in the following areas: information representation and
retrieval; language acquisition; language, culture and society;
linguistic theory; logic and language; and teaching English as a
second language, and is usually completed in two years.
Interested parties may request an application from the Graduate
School, Suite 303 Bowne Hall, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY
13244-1200.

While there is no application deadline, interested parties are
encouraged to apply as early as possible.  Additional
information about the assistantship may be obtained from the
