We'd appreciate your limiting conference announcements to 150 lines,
so that we can post more than 1 per issue. Please consider omitting
information useful only to attendees, such as information on housing,
transportation, or rooms and times of sessions. Please do not use
abbreviations or acronyms for your conference unless you explain
them in your text. Many people outside your area of specialization
will not recognize them. Thank you for your cooperation.

                                     ON

     NEW METHODS IN LANGUAGE PROCESSING

                     January 14th to 17th 1998

       MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

NeMLaP 3 - The Second International Conference on New Methods in Language
Processing will be held at Macquarie University in Sydney on January 14th
to 17th 1998. The conference is being organized jointly by The Flinders
University of South Australia, The University of Sydney and Macquarie
University. NeMLaP 3 will be the focal point of a series of events relating
to Natural Language Processing which will hosted by various universities
around Australia during the fortnight preceeding the annual Australian
Computer Science Week.

NeMLaP 3 will be the third in a series of conferences focusing on
alternative theories and methodologies to the mainstream techniques of
symbolic computational linguistics. This series of international
conferences provides a forum for researchers in the broad area of new
methods in NLP, i.e., symbolic and non-symbolic techniques and
analogy-based, statistical and connectionist processing, to present their
most recent research and to discuss its implications.

             NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING
                               FORTNIGHT

The NeMLaP 3 conference will be preceeded by Tutorials, and followed by a
Postgraduate workshop the following week. SIGNLL, the ACL's Special
Interest Group on Natural Language Learning, plans to organize an invent
following the conference. Finally, the annual Australian Computer Science
Week follows - consisting of the Australasian Computer Science Conference
(ACSC) and a number of specialist events (Theory, Computer Architecture,
DataBase).

The NLP fortnight goes from Monday 12th January to Saturday 24th January
and will take you around most of Australia's major cities (including at
least Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide). ACSW is expected to be held in
Perth.

Further information, and the Call for Papers for the individual events,
will be made available shortly. The following web page will be developed
to reflect further details of the events of the fortnight as they become
available.
