POST-DOCS IN LANGUAGE & COGNITION, AND GESTURE RESEARCH

The Language and Cognition section (successor to the Cognitive
Anthropology Research Group) of the Max Planck Institute for
Psycholinguistics has up to 3 post-doc positions available for 1-2
years from January 1 1998.

Strict preconditions are:

(a) field experience and linguistic expertise in a non-Indo-European
language (fieldwork should have been conducted in the speech community
that is the focus of research) OR proven expertise in the study of
gesture;

(b) PhD in hand by starting date;

(c) training in anthropology, linguistics, psychology or cognitive
science; interdisciplinary experience a distinct advantage.

Preference will be given to candidates with proven interests in
semantics, cognition, and/or experimental psychology.

Candidates will be expected to contribute to one or more of the
relevant research projects, currently focused on spatial language,
gesture, argument structure of verbs, and communication under
impairment (future projects may include classification, and reasoning
in language). Opportunities include fully-funded fieldwork, some
conference costs, and working in fully-equipped interdisciplinary
labs.  Competitive post-doc level salary.

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is an institution
dedicated to the study of the psychology of language, with
international and interdisciplinary staff. The working language is
English. The Language and Cognition section uses cross-linguistic and
cross-cultural data to explore the interface between language and
other cognitive faculties, and has especially close connection to the
sections of the Institute responsible for the study of language
acquisition and speech production.

Deadline July 7th 1997.

All enquiries should be accompanied by a CV, and the names of 3
referees. They may be emailed to cogant at mpi.nl, or faxed to 0031
(Holland)- 24- 3521300. Supporting materials may be mailed to
Prof. S. C. Levinson, Cognitive Anthropology, Max Planck Institute, PB
310, Nijmegen 6500 AH, The Netherlands. Further information about the
Group and the Institute is available on request.
