Subject:  International Congress in Paris:bike trip 23 July

Dear Linguists

Those of you who are planning to attend the International Congress on
20-25 July in Paris are probably aware that there is a break on
Wednesday 23 July . A number of excursions (by bus or train) are
offered by the organizing committee to our foreign colleagues.  For
those who have not made any plans yet and who are fond of biking I
would like to organize a tour of central Paris or a trip along the
canal de l'Ourcq on the tow-path or in the Bois de Vincennes. We will
start from Place de la Bastille, which is the starting point of
several bike lanes; bike rentals are available in a shop near by for
$12 a day. I would like to know how many people would be interested. I
don't think I could take more than about a dozen so please respond
asap.

Subject:  Undergraduate Program Advisory Committee of the LSA


The Executive Committee of the Linguistic Society of America recently
established the Undergraduate Program Advisory Committee.

The Committee's charge is as follows:

The aim of the Undergraduate Program Advisory Committee is to
facilitate the establishment and expansion of undergraduate programs
in linguistics at universities, colleges, and community colleges,
through a three-pronged effort involving:

-  promoting, supporting and assessing efforts for the creation of
linguistic programs with an undergraduate focus;

-  supporting and assessing efforts to make undergraduate
linguistics courses a necessary part of general education curricula
and a common elective choice for undergraduates; and

-   developing strategies for bringing the value of linguistic
studies to the attention of undergraduates.

This effort should yield materials that could be used as a basis for
discussion and negotiation with university or college administrators,
including curriculum plans, tools for projecting enrollments, tools
for financial analysis, and strategic advice from successful
undergraduate linguistics programs.  It should involve making the
existence of these resources known to linguists, especially those at
institutions which do not yet have well-established undergraduate
linguistics programs, a plan for communicating the urgency of this
issue to academic linguists throughout the US, and an assessment of
the usefulness and feasibility of the LSA's continuing to provide such
assistance and guidance.

The membership of this new Committee includes:
