Some years ago, my PC clone (a 386SX) came with a CD-ROM called "Languages
of the World," a DOS-only (not even Windows) collection of about a dozen
professional-quality dictionaries--English and French, German, Japanese,
etc.--that was very useful and very well designed. (The publisher seems to
have been NTC Corp., and it was distributed by Sony USA.)

Now I use a Macintosh exclusively, and I desperately need an equivalent
CD-ROM for the Mac; I am currently translating a 1000-page French history
book and sorely miss the convenience of electronic look-up vs. hoisting
the heavy Larousse every few minutes.

I've tried a couple of language-learning programs, but their "dictionaries,"
even the one that promises 25,000 words in 5 languages, are nothing but
phrasebooks with a single equivalent for every word (and the exotic words
are not included).

Can anyone direct me to what I'm looking for? It needs to be the full text
of the dictionary/ies, including all the numbered meanings, idioms, examples,
etc.; French is the immediate need, but other langauges would be nice too.

There's an ad in this week's New York Times Book Review for a promising-
sounding product, which I've mislaid so I can't recommend it or ward of
references to it, but the gentleman at their 800 number said (a) it's
Windows-only (only their instructional package in the same ad is Mac) and
(b) the dictionaries aren't as detailed as the Harrap's used on "Languages
of the World."

(I'll be at the American Oriental Society meeting from Thursday to Wed-
nesday, so I won't be able to acknowledge responses after this Wednesday.)

I am looking for referees for a manuscript dealing with
geographic names and particularly changes in geographic
names in the former Yugoslavia. Referees should be familiar
with both the language and political situations in the area
and as well they should have some knowledge of the impact of
social and political change on name changes.
I would appreciate subscribers suggesting themselves or others.
If you would like more information, I will send a copy of the
abstract.

Thank you for your help.

I am looking for languages that have borrowed words from Portuguese.
Does anyone have references on Portuguese borrowings in other languages?
Of particular interest to me is the phonological adaptation of these
borrowings.
Please reply to prunet.jean-francois at uqam.ca
