We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Dear linguists,

I am looking for any reference concerning the economy of language(s)
from the 18th or early 19th centuries. I am particularly interested in
authors who link economy of language to the "one-meaning-one-form"
principle. Please send all replies directly to my e-mail address, and
I will post a summary, if I compile enough information.

Thanks in advance.

Hello people

I'm currently planning to write a large text on the use of written
questionnaires in language study of all kinds - advantages,
disadvantages, history, theoretical discussion and son on. The first
step is of course to obtain as wide and as varied a bibliography as
possible, and that's why I'm turning to you. If you have any pointers,
ideas, work you've done, work you're friends or colleagues have done,
anything in fact, involving the use of a written questionnaire in any
form of language work, particularly if the person concerned has made
remarks about the appropriateness or otherwise of the procedure, I
should be delighted to hear from you?

many thanks

Jim Walker

I am Italian.I have a degree in Foreign Languages (Bologna
University).I studied Russian and Chinese.I am a translator.
As I want to obtain a second degree at the Department of Oriental
Studies of Bologna University, I have to write a degree thesis about
the theory of translation in China.
It is possible to study translation from different points of
view.Russian theorists, such as Fyodorov, approached this subject from
the linguistic aspect. Some western scholars (E.Gunn, F.Masini),
studying the formation of modern Chinese between XIX and XX centuries,
analysed the role of translations from Japanese and Western languages.
I would like to follow the linguistic approach for my work.I would
be grateful for biblioghraphical information.

Yours Faithfully
Paolo Galvagni, Bologna, Italy
