SECOND CIRCULAR
The major varieties of English (MAVEN)
An international conference at Vaxjo University College, Sweden
20-22 November 1997
English is used by a constantly growing number of people all over the
world, and several varieties, different Englishes, have been
identified. However, only a limited number of regional varieties of
English serve as models for learners in other parts of the world. The
most important of these are usually considered to be the British,
American, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand varieties.
The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars who are
studying the development of these varieties, and in particular their
interrelationships. The question of how, and to what extent, British
and American English differ is an ever intriguing one for many
learners. How strong is the influence of American vocabulary, grammar
and pronunciation on British English? Is there also a current going
the other way? Where does Canadian English stand in relation to
British and American? And what about the influences from Britain and
America on the Englishes of Australia and New Zealand?
The answers to questions such as these have an obvious bearing on
language pedagogy as well as lexicography and language description in
general, but also on research areas like language change and
sociolinguistics.
Papers are invited on all aspects of these major varieties of English
- pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, pragmatics. Proposals for papers
on other varieties than those mentioned may also be accepted on an
individual basis, depending on time available and other programme
considerations.
Reports on empirical investigations (studies based on electronic
corpora, elicitation tests, text analysis, observation etc.) are
particularly welcome.

Travel
>>From most places abroad, the easiest way to reach Vaxjo is by air via
Copenhagen or Stockholm. There are also train connections from
Copenhagen, G=F6teborg and Stockholm. A longer version of this
circular containing more information on travel will be sent on
request.
Publication
We plan to publish a volume of selected papers from the conference.
Social programme
There will be a conference dinner in the campus castle (must be seen
to be believed) and a herring party at (inside) a glassworks.
Accommodation
Participants are asked to make their own hotel arrangements. More
information on hotels will be sent on request.
Submission of papers
Send in your abstract (approximately 250 words in Word, WordPerfect,
RTF or ascii format) by 15 June, as an attachment to an e-mail message
to: Staffan.Klintborg at hum.hv.se. In addition, include the abstract in
the body of the e-mail message. If you do not have access to e-mail,
send in four copies of the abstract on paper to: Staffan Klintborg,
Department of the Humanities, Vaxjo University College, SE-351 95
VAXJO, Sweden.
Conference fee
The conference fee includes lunches on Thursday, Friday and Saturday,
reception on Thursday evening, castle dinner on Friday evening,
smelting-house herring on Saturday evening as well as morning and
afternoon teas and coffees.
Reduced rate (before 1 June 1997): SEK 800 (approximately USD 105)
Normal rate after 1 June 1997): SEK 1000 (approximately USD 130)
The fee should be paid in Swedish currency by bank transfer to the
bank account of Vaxjo University College, 5439-10-315-07 in
Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken, G=F6teborg, Sweden (SWIFT address:
ESSESESG) stating your name and the name of the conference
(MAVEN). Checks and cash will not be accepted, and neither will
payment in foreign currency.

Call for Papers
MID-AMERICA LINGUISTICS CONFERENCE
October 24-25, 1997
University of Missouri-Columbia
Plenary Speaker: James McCawley
Proposals for papers in any area of linguistics will be considered for
the general session. Papers will also be considered for a special
session on the History of Linguistics.
Presentation time for papers will be limited to twenty minutes, with
ten minutes for discussion.
DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF ABSTRACTS IS AUGUST 25, 1997. Authors are
asked to submit three copies of an anonymous one-page abstract. Also
include a 3x5 card with paper title, author(s), affliation(s),
address, phone number, and e-mail address.
E-mail submissions will not be accepted. Faxed submissions must be
followed immediately by mailed abstracts. Please send abstracts to
the address given below.
