Abstract:
The Syllable in Frisian gives a detailed treatment of the syllable and
syllabification in Frisian. As such, it is intended to be a
contribution to the study of the phonology of Frisian. At the same time, it
aims at placing a great many (new) data at the disposal of the
international phonological community. The analyses are carried out within
the general frameworks of lexical phonology and non-linear (prosodic)
generative phonology. As to syllabification, a rule-based approach is
adopted. The analyses proposed are meant to be observationally and
descriptively adequate to start off with. However, by invoking universal
phonological principles and by referring to universal phonological
tendencies as much as possible, the author hopes to have attained a certain
degree of explanatory adequacy as well. Where appropriate, it is pointed
out how and why these principles and tendencies are contradicted by the
Frisian facts.

This study is of interest to both linguists interested in Frisian and a
general phonological readership.
