Dean Position Announcement
Applications and nominations are now being accepted for the position
of Dean of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf-- a job
unique in the world of higher education.
The National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), one of the seven
colleges of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), is a
federally-funded institution created by an Act of Congress in 1966. It
is the largest post-secondary program in the world offering mainstream
higher education opportunities to deaf and hard-of-hearing
students. It has more than 1,100 students enrolled in undergraduate
and graduate programs in NTID and in the other colleges of RIT.
Rochester Institute of Technology is among the nation's most highly
rated comprehensive technological universities. RIT has an enrollment
of more than 12,000 students and offers undergraduate and graduate
degrees in over 230 different majors.
The Dean of NTID is the chief academic officer of the college. NTID
has over 250 faculty and 270 staff organized into seven different
centers, each of which reports directly to the Dean. Working with the
faculty of NTID, the provost of RIT, and the vice president for NTID,
the Dean is responsible for curriculum, faculty and staff development,
and oversight of programming and support services for all deaf and
hard-of-hearing students enrolled throughout the seven colleges of
RIT. The Dean of NTID reports to both the RIT provost and to the vice
president for NTID, and is a member of the RIT Deans' Council.
Because of the broad responsibilities and unique character of NTID, we
seek an exceptionally well-qualified person--a proven leader with
vision--to fill this position. The following qualifications are
required:
* Record of achievement and leadership in progressively
more responsible positions in higher education
* Experience in curriculum development and management
* Earned doctorate or equivalent
* Teaching experience at the college level
* Ability to communicate in sign language
* Ability to lead and contribute in meaningful ways to
RIT's commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and
individual differences
In addition, the following qualifications are preferred:
* Sign language fluency
* Understanding of and ability to articulate aspects of
deaf culture, language, and communication
* Record of scholarship
* Knowledge of technical and career-oriented post-
secondary education

RESEARCH ASSISTANT
The Department of Language & Linguistic Science at the University of
York, UK, is looking for a Research Assistant to work on the project
'An integrated prosodic approach to device-independent,
natural-sounding speech synthesis'. The project is funded by the
EPSRC, and is being carried out in collaboration with Cambridge
University and University College London.
The post offered is for two years, starting from 1 April 1998. (NB:
This is misprinted in an advert in The Guardian 11.11.97 as 1 January
1998.)
The Research Assistant will be responsible for conducting work on
timing in spoken British English. York's contribution to the project
will be in the timing domain, with focus on the relationship between
linguistic structure and timing. Initially the work will concentrate
on syllable joins within words of differing metrical structures, but
later on the focus will shift to word-joins, and then to faster and
more casual speech. The person appointed will also share
responsibility for disseminating the findings, and writing up the
results. The work will be done in conjunction with colleagues in
Cambridge and London.
The person appointed will have a degree in linguistics with phonetics
and phonology, and a master's degree in a relevant field; good
computing skills (particularly using UNIX and ESPS/WAVES) and
experience of the acoustic analysis of speech are also essential. An
understanding of statistical methods and their application to large
databases would be an advantage.
The salary offered is GBP16,927, point 6 at Grade 1B.
