The Humboldt-University in Berlin and the University of Potsdam are
offering
one postgraduate stipend
(linguistics and adjacent fields), to start 1. April 1998.
The successful applicant will join the graduate study program "Economy and
Complexity in Language" (Graduiertenkolleg "Oekonomie und Komplexitaet in
der Sprache").
The study /research program is concerned with the organisation of the
human language faculty, with special emphasis on economy, optimality and
minimality in the principles and operations that make possible and
constrain the highly complex structures of language.
The program is divided into 4 project areas:
- the structure of the language faculty (Bierwisch, Eisenberg,
Fanselow, Kosta, Lang, Pompino-Marschall, Wilder)
- language change (Donhauser, Kosta)
- development and disruption of the language faculty (de Bleser,
Weissenborn)
- language processing (Dietrich, Doherty, Hassler, Kunze,
Staudacher)

address below. Applicants should have a PhD in contemporary linguistic
theory, and speciality in one or more of the areas listed above. NB
proficiency in German is required! Applications containing degree /

Subject: SLA at UC Davis
The Linguistics Program of the University of California, Davis, has a
one-year opening for an appointment in second-language acquisition for the
academic year 1998-1999. The candidate must hold a doctorate (at time of
application), be engaged in a strong research program in second language
acquisition and have experience teaching professional preparation courses
in teaching English as a second/foreign language. The candidate will be
expected to teach courses on theoretical and applied aspects of
second-language acquisition both on the undergraduate and the graduate
level. The possibility exists that the position will become a tenure-track
position as part of the establishment of a Second Language Institute at
Davis, in which case a search will be opened during the 1998-1999 year.
Rank open, salary commensurate with qualifications. If the candidate fills
the position as a Lecturer, the position will be covered by a collective
bargaining unit. The University of California does not discriminate in any

Subject: Spanish linguistics
Position in Spanish Linguistics
The department of Languages and Linguistics invites applications for a
full time, tenure-track position in the Hispanic Studies Program,
starting June 1, 1998.
Requirements: PhD in Linguistics or in Hispanic Studies with a
specialization in Linguistics; primary research: Spanish Syntax and/or
Semantics. An M.A. in Latin American Literature and/or previous
experience teaching Literature are highly desirable. Good knowledge
of French.
Duties: The successful candidate will teach advanced Spanish grammar,
Semantics, composition, and will also be asked to teach introductory
(survey) courses in Latin American Literature and civilization. The
normal teaching load is two courses per semester.
Conditions and salary are set by the Collective Agreement signed by
the University and the Professors' Union. Laval is an Equal
