Twenty-sixth Annual Meeting of the North American Conference on
Afroasiatic Linguistics

April 3-5, 1998 in New Orleans

The 1998 meeting will be held in New Orleans just before the annual
meeting of the American Oriental Society (Apr. 5-8). Papers on the
structures and histories of languages of the Berber, Chadic, Cushitic,
Egyptian, Omotic, and Semitic families are hereby solicited. Please
send an abstract which does not exceed half a letter-size page (8.5 x
11 or A4) for reproduction in the abstract handbook by early December.
>>From outside the US, please use airmail. Use first line for title of
paper, second line for presenter name and affiliation. Do not use
typeface smaller than 12-point.

No e-mailed abstracts will be accepted.

		International Conference
		The Native Tongue /La langue maternelle
             Deadline for receipt of abstracts:  30 May 1998

Invited speakers:

Henri Meschonnic, Regine Robin, Rachel Ertel, Stella Baruk, Charles
Melman, Morris Halle, Antoine Culioli , Claire Blanche-Benveniste

Abstracts are invited for 30-minute talks on any sociolinguistic,
psycholinguistic or psychoanalytic aspect of the relationship of
speakers to the mother tongue, whether in a
multicultural-multilingual setting or in a context of language
substitution, language attrition, language loss or language
revival. The role of language in the structuring of the self will
also be considered.  Papers may be presented in French or in English
Authors are asked to send:

   * four (4) copies of an anonymous abstract
   * one additional camera-ready copy with the author's name and
affiliation (to be published in the hand-book if the paper is accepted
for presentation).

Abstracts should be no more than one page (A4 or letter size) in
length, with an additional page for references if necessary.

Please include one more page containing:

   * the title of the paper
   * the name and affiliation of the author(s),
   * the primary author's postal address, e-mail address, telephone
number, and fax number.

Papers presented at the conference will be published in the form of a
special issue of a major French journal (negociations are underway)
and presentation implies consent to such publication.

Les personnes desirant intervenir dans ce colloque sont priees
d'envo= yer le resume d'une communication de 30 minutes portant
sur tout aspect sociolinguistique, psycholinguistique ou
psychanalytique du rapport du sujet parlant a la langue maternelle,
dans un contexte de multilinguisme individuel ou de societe.

Priere d'envoyer :
* quatre exemplaires d'un resume anonyme
* un exemplaire portant le nom et les coordonnees institutionnelles de
l'auteur pour publication dans le programme du colloque.

Les resumes ne devront pas depasser une page A4 plus une page de

Les communications retenues seront publiees sous la forme d'un
