COMPUTATIONAL LINGUIST for Korean

The NLP Group in Microsoft Research is looking for a computational
lexicographer for Korean.  The position will be located on the
Microsoft central campus in Redmond, Washington, USA.  This is a great
opportunity to work with a dedicated group of researchers who are
creating a system for unrestricted text understanding and generation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The lexicographer's primary responsibilities include maintaining the
dictionary and developing and maintaining the morphological rules for
Korean, in accordance with the overall system architecture used by the
Microsoft Research NLP group.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The lexicographer's qualifications should include experience in
linguistic research and online dictionary development, programming
experience, keen interest in lexical issues, and an advanced degree in
linguistics or a closely related discipline.  Native proficiency in
Korean is assumed.  A practical orientation is highly desirable.
Significant programming experience or experience extracting lexical
information from online dictionaries or corpora would be a plus.

ABOUT THE MICROSOFT NLP RESEARCH GROUP:

We are in the process of designing and building a system to analyze
unrestricted natural language, taking input text, and moving from
lexical/morphological analysis through syntax, semantics, and
eventually pragmatics and discourse.  A generation component is also
planned.  The programming system and underlying principles that are
used for English have been found to be applicable to other languages.
We are empirically oriented, and are happy to use good linguistic
ideas wherever they can be found.  A reasonable first-version summary
of our techniques and some of our experience can be found in the book
"Natural Language Processing: The PLNLP Approach," Kluwer Academic
Publishers, Boston, 1993.

THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT SAN ANTONIO

Division of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies

[English as a Second Language]

The University of Texas at San Antonio seeks applicants for a
tenure-track Assistant Professor position for Fall 1998, pending
budget approval, in the area of English as a Second Language.  The
Division offers a Master of Arts degree in Bicultural-Bilingual
Studies with concentrations in Bicultural Studies,
Bicultural-Bilingual Education, and English as a Second Language.  It
also provides undergraduate and graduate programs for teacher
certification as well as support courses for other programs in the
University, and is currently developing a Ph.D.  program in Culture,
Literacy and Language.

Responsibilities: Teach a range of graduate and undergraduate courses
in ESL methods, second language acquisition, and linguistics, advise
graduate students, pursue an active research agenda, and contribute to
the development of the proposed doctoral program.  Candidate will
teach courses offered either at UTSA Downtown Campus or on the Main
Campus.

Required Qualifications: Doctorate or ABD with expertise in second
language acquisition and applied linguistics, and formal preparation
in a related discipline.  Teaching experience.  Candidate must have
potential for research and publication in one or more of the following
areas: teaching English as a second language, second language
acquisition, second language literacy, the education and assessment of
English-language learners, or bilingualism.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in teaching or conducting
research in public schools (K-12), university teaching experience,
experience with funded research projects, ability to work
collaboratively with colleagues, international experience, and
proficiency in another language other than English, with a preference
for Spanish.

Appointment: Starting with Fall 1998 semester.  Doctorate must be
completed by August 15, 1998, for rank of Assistant Professor without
tenure; ABD applicants close to completion will be considered at rank
of instructor.  Salary is competitive and commensurate with
qualifications and experience.
