The Department of Japanese Studies at Salem-Teikyo
University invites applications for a temporary
assistant professor or instructor of Japanese for the
five months from January 1, 1998 to May 30, 1998. The
duty is to teach elementary Japanese (Japanese 1 and 2)
to American students. Applicants must have native
fluency in Japanese and an MA in the relevant fields.
Yaruki no aru kata, mattemasu! (This December about 20
students are going to Chicago to take the Japanese
Proficiency Test provided by the Japan Foundation.)

FULL-TIME TENURE-TRACK POSITION IN ENGLISH LINGUISTICS
Position No. 98-99 LINGUISTICS-TT
THE UNIVERSITY: California State University, Hayward occupies 342
acres in the Hayward hills overlooking San Francisco Bay. Cal State
Hayward's central Bay Area location provides easy access to museums,
art galleries, aquariums, planetariums, theaters, sports events, and
concerts. Its proximity to both the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra
Nevada Mountains offers recreational diversion as well as excellent
laboratories for educational studies. The University has approximately
13,000 students and 600 faculty, and a library that contains over one
million items, accessible on-line. Organized into four schools--Arts,
Letters, and Social Sciences; Business and Economics; Education and
Allied Studies; and Science--the University offers bachelor's degrees
in 40 fields and master's degrees in 23, as well as special majors.
Additional programs lead to teaching and other credentials. CSUH also
operates a second campus in nearby Contra Costa County, which provides
full instructional support for over 2,500 upper division and graduate
students.
THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of English strives to provide a
rigorous, stimulating, and rewarding education to students living in
an increasingly diverse society. Our programs introduce a challenging
multi-cultural curriculum that incorporates cross-disciplinary
education. Serving over 250 undergraduates, the English major consists
of a core curriculum and options in British and American literature;
the emergent literature of women, gay people, and ethnic and cultural
minorities; language and discourse; creative writing; and
interdisciplinary studies. We offer the Master of Arts degree in
Literature and the Master of Arts degree in Teaching English to
Speakers of Other Languages. A major responsibility of the Department
is the teaching of writing. In addition to general education writing
courses, we offer all levels of composition, including developmental,
creative, and on-line writing courses. Our graduate offerings include
seminars in composition theory and writing across the curriculum. To

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The normal teaching load is nine courses a
year (three four-unit courses each quarter for three quarters each
year). The successful applicant will teach courses in English grammar
and in the study of language (introduction to linguistics), and may be
asked to teach courses in phonology, semantics, and other specialized
topics in linguistics, including courses in the Department's M.A.
TESOL program. He/she should expect to participate in the grading of
M.A. examinations, the supervision of M.A. theses in his/her field of
expertise, and in student advising and other activities appropriate to
a member of an academic department. Please note that teaching
assignments at California State University, Hayward include courses at
both the Hayward and Contra Costa campuses.
RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Hiring classification and salary
are dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to
budgetary authorization.
DATE OF APPOINTMENT: September 1, 1998.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must hold the Ph.D. in Linguistics or in
English with a concentration in language or linguistics. They must be
knowledgeable about nonformal and formal approaches to syntax and
semantics. Some knowledge of computer-assisted language learning and
language assessment and testing is desirable. Candidates must
demonstrate a willingness and ability to instruct, advise, and mentor
students of diverse backgrounds and abilities. To be recommended for
tenure, the successful applicant must demonstrate satisfactory
performance in the areas of teaching; research and scholarship;
service to the university, the profession, and the community.
