DESCRIPTION OF POSITIONS
(1) Rank: assistant professor (koshi) or above; tenure track
Subject: general English for communication, speech communication

Subject: general English for communication, linguistics
Duties:
Teaching: (1) communicative English, speech, discussion, debate
(2) communicative English, general linguistics, phonetics
to undergraduate students.
Other: (for both (1) and (2)) as a full-time, tenure-track faculty
member, the successful applicant will attend faculty meetings,
serve on committees, and do other work that is normally
shared by faculty members at Japanese universities.
Starting date: April 1, 1998
Salary:
Salary will be determined in accord with the age, education, and
professional experience of the successful applicant. A 36 year old
person with eight years of teaching experience and a Ph.D. in hand,
for example, could expect to earn over 9 million yen per year (over
80,000 U.S. dollars per year at current exchange rates; net income
would be less due to Japanese taxes and other deductions) but the
income of a person with lesser qualifications would be proportionately
smaller. Salaries are only determined by standardized methods of
calculation and are NOT negotiable.
Terms of employment:
Kumamoto Gakuen University does not distinguish between Japanese and
non-Japanese faculty. Accordingly, all full-time faculty members
begin their employment with the Japanese equivalent of tenure.
Other benefits:
Travel allowance 312,000 yen per year
Research allowance: 350,000 yen per year for purchase
of books and equipment
Computer budget: up to 1,000,000 yen for purchase/lease of
computer, equipment, and software
Bonuses: 3 times a year
Health insurance, family allowance, housing allowance.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum university degree required: MA or equivalent
University degree preferred: Ph.D.
Subject specialization:
TESL/linguistics degrees are preferred but persons with degrees in
related fields may also apply.
English skills:
The successful applicant must be a native speaker of English or
possess a near-native level of skill in spoken and written
English.
Japanese skills:
A native or near-native level of proficiency in Japanese is required.
*After initial screening of documents, an oral interview will be held to
determine applicants' abilities in their non-native language(s).

Subject: English Linguistics
Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer in English Linguistics
The English Department at Aarhus University invites applications
for the tenured position of a "Lektor" (equivalent to Associate
Professor/Senior Lecturer) in English Linguistics with a
specialization in either psycholinguistic or other applied approaches
to morphosyntax. The position will be available as of August 1, 1998.
Required qualifications:
- a Ph.D. or the equivalent in English
linguistics or in neighboring areas (e.g. psycholinguistics, SLA)
involving English,
- a strong record of research in at least one of
the above mentioned areas of specialization,
- teaching experience in English syntax and morphology as well as
psycholinguistics or other areas of applied linguistics,
- administrative experience with, for example, research projects and grants.
The successful candidate will
- teach graduate and undergraduate courses in English linguistics and
should also be prepared to teach language proficiency,
- continue a strong record of research and publication,
- collaborate in the further development of the Department's profile in
English Applied Linguistics,
- share a fair burden of administrative responsibilities.
All instruction at the Department is in English. However, other things
being equal, candidates who are proficient in Danish will be
preferred. Candidates who do not speak Danish will be expected to
learn enough Danish to participate fully in the work of the Department
within two years.
The starting salary for a "Lektor" is appr. 275,000 DKK before taxes.
