The Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta is engaged in an
extensive process of staff renewal and is committed to ensuring that the
substantial number of hirings anticipated over the next several years will

The University of Alberta is seeking to fill a tenure-track position in
German applied linguistics, effective July 1, 1998, at or near the floor
of the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern Languages
and Comparative Studies at the University of Alberta. The 1997 minimum
salary for Assistant Professor is $39,490. The successful candidate should
be capable of teaching courses in applied linguistics and German language
and should have a demonstrated commitment to research. A strong background
and interest in German Studies and Business German would be a very
valuable asset. A completed PhD or equivalent and native or near-native
proficiency in German are required. Applications, including a resume,
copies of relevant publications, and three letters of recommendation,

The Department of English at the University of Alabama invites
applications for a tenure-track assistant professor starting August
1998. Duties include teaching, research, and service. A Ph.D. in
Applied Linguistics/Linguistics is required, with strengths in the
areas of language teaching methodology and socio-historical approaches
to language evolution. Candidate should be able to offer a range of
linguistics courses including introductory linguistics and history of
English. Competence in at least one other language and international
teaching experience are highly desirable. Preference will be given to
candidates who have an interest in working with our faculty in
MA-TESOL and rhetoric and composition.

MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY
HEAD, DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES
POSITION
The Department of Foreign Languages invites nominations and applications
for the position of Head of the Department of Foreign Languages, to begin
July 1, 1998. Nominees/Applicants must have a Ph.D. (or its equivalent) in
a language offered by the Department, a distinguished record in
scholarship, a proven commitment to excellence in teaching, and experience
in administration with the ability to provide effective leadership for a
diverse faculty. Dedication to modern technologies and methods related to
second- language acquisition is essential. The appointment is a tenure-
track position in the Department, at the rank of Associate Professor or
Professor. The Department consists of seventeen (17) faculty members,
teaching French, German, Greek, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish
language, literature, and culture, with such specializations as French
Classicism, German Philology, Spanish Golden Age, and Romance Linguistics.
Programs offered include a B.A. degree in Foreign Languages, a Foreign
Language-Education (B.S.) degree, an M.A. degree in Foreign Languages, as
well as a five-year, two-degree (B.B.A and B.A.) program in International
Business, in cooperation with the College of Business and Industry. The
Department has approximately 140 undergraduate majors and 18 master's
students, including 12 Graduate Teaching Assistants. Between 1200 and 1400
undergraduate students take foreign-language courses each semester.
Mississippi State University is a Land Grant, Doctoral I university, with a
current enrollment of 15,000 students, of whom 2300 are graduate students.
The University comprises eleven schools and colleges, with the College of
Arts and Sciences (in which the Department is housed) being the largest.
The University Honors Program is highly regarded, and the University is
noted for its innovative programs in art, music education, and the
sciences, with certificate programs in Gerontology and Women's Studies.
