1. Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Phonetics/Phonology

The University, recognised internationally for excellence in teaching and
research, is located centrally in Melbourne, a vibrant centre of Australian
intellectual and cultural life.

The Position

Located in the Department of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Faculty
of Arts, and reporting to the Head of Department, the successful applicant
will teach and supervise research in phonetics and phonology, teach
introductory linguistics;  continue a strong record of research,
publication and grant-getting in phonetics/phonology; supervise and develop
the phonetics laboratory, and carry out administration at an appropriate
level.

The Person

You must have a PhD in a relevant area, and a proven track record in the
areas specified above. In addition, the ability to contribute to teaching,
research and postgraduate research in areas forming part of the
Department's strategic foci would be an advantage. These include applied
phonetics / phonology; field linguistics; linguistics of English; and
cognitive science; and Applied Linguistics.

The Benefits

Salary $44,764 - 53,158 (Lecturer Level B), or $54,835 - 63,229 (Senior
Lecturer Level C) plus 17% employer superannuation contributions and car
parking.

Duration

This is a continuing position, available from 1 January 1998.

language; and carry out administration, in particular of the English
Language interdepartmental program, at an appropriate level.

Department's strategic foci would be an advantage. These include
descriptive linguistics, applied phonetics/phonology; field linguistics;

                            JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

       INSTITUTE OF LINGUISTICS, PREPARATORY OFFICE, ACADEMIA SINICA

     The Institute of Linguistics (Preparatory Office), Academia Sinica
invites applications from citizens of the Republic of China for research
positions leading toward tenure track posts. Currently, one tenure-track
position is open, but non-tenure track post-doctoral positions pending
budgetary approval are also available. The area of specialization is open,
but preference will be given to those in the following fields: phonology
(and phonetics), semantics, Min and Hakka dialects, Chinese dialect studies,
Austronesian languages minority languages in China and cognitive linguistics.

     Applicants already holding a Ph.D. will be considered for the position
of Assistant Research Fellow (equivalent to Assistant Professor) or
Post-doctoral Research Specialist.  These are purely research positions and
no teaching is required.  The minimum salary is NT818,040 (about
US$29,747)/yr for Assistant Research Fellow, plus bonuses.

     Applicants should send a vitae, transcripts from graduate school, an
abstract of the dissertation (including the title, chapter by chapter
summary, methodology, materials, and main conclusions), and three letters of
