Abstract:
Passive Voice in Older Egyptian examines several core phenomena
surrounding the active-passive relation in Older Egyptian, the
earliest stage of the Ancient Egyptian language. This language has
three morphological passive patterns, which employ a specialized
morpheme for the formal expression of passive voice, as opposed to
Statives and infinitives, which may have a passive interpretation but
lack overt passive morphology.

As of yet, the syntactic and semantic aspects of the Older Egyptian
passive have not been investigated in detail. The present study has
both a descriptive and a theoretical goal. At the descriptive level,
it aims at a near-exhaustive survey of Older Egyptian passive
phenomena. At the theoretical level, it seeks to gain some insight
into the modular character of the Older Egyptian passive which
involves the complex interaction of several grammatical components:
syntax, semantics and morphology.

Making Egyptian language facts available to the non-specialist for the
first time, this book is of interest to a general linguistic
readership.
