Subject:  Program Announcement

The linguistics faculty at Arizona State University would like to
announce to collegues and interested students the new Ph.D. program in
Linguistics/Rhetoric/Composition and remind them of the M.A. program
in Linguistics. For further information about program requirements
and application, please see ASU's English and Committee on
Linguistics websites, listed at the bottom of this posting. Faculty
research interests can also be found there and include topics such as
political language; pho/morphology of Lushootseed; historical syntax;
acquisition of L2 phonology; pragmatics of humor.

Opportunities exist for Teaching Assistantships at both the M.A. and
Ph.D. levels. The department typically supports 6 linguistics
students to assist in such courses as Introduction to the Study of
Language; English in its Social Setting; and Modern English Syntax,
including service learning sections. Other financial support is
available through Research Assistantships and out-of-state tuition
waivers.

Uncommonly taught languages available include languages such as Thai,
Vietnamese, Indonesian, Swedish, Norwegian, ASL, Hebrew, and Sanskrit;
summer tuition-free offerings have recently included Tatar and
Macedonian.

ASU will be hosting several conferences in the coming months,
including LASSO/WECOL (October 1998).
