LINGUISTICS, Assistant Professor, tenure-track position beginning in
September, 1998. Ph.D. required. The salary is competitive. Applicants
should provide evidence of effective teaching and show potential for
strong scholarship. We have a strong linguistics component in our
English studies and English education programs and are seeking
candidates with thorough training in theoretical linguistics with
ability to teach the history of English and introductory
syntax. Innovative approaches to integrating linguistics into an
English studies/education curriculum encouraged. Successful
candidates will also be expected to contribute to the department's
programs in literature, literacy, education, or composition.

Subject: Research positions in generation and anaphora
RESEARCH POSITIONS IN NATURAL LANGUAGE GENERATION AND ANAPHORA.
Two positions are available to work on a joint project between the
Universities of Edinburgh (HCRC - Human Communication Research Centre)
and Brighton (ITRI - Information Technology Research Institute). The
aim of the project is to incorporate recent results in corpus analysis
and psycholinguistics in theories of discourse structure and its
effects on the use of pronouns, definite descriptions and proper
names. The resulting theories and algorithms will be applied to two
natural language generation systems currently under development at
Edinburgh and Brighton.
Both HCRC and ITRI offer excellent environments for this kind of
research; information about current projects and other activities at
the two locations can be found at http://www.hcrc.ed.ac.uk/ and
http://www.itri.bton.ac.uk/. The participants in the project are an
interdisciplinary team of psycholinguists, computational linguists,
and discourse analysts.
We are looking for researchers with proven experience in natural
language generation, anaphora and discourse, with a strong interest in
psycholinguistics and with good programming skills. Both junior and
senior positions are available. The grant includes funds for
attendance at relevant workshops and conferences.

Subject: Hispanic Language & Linguistics
LECTURESHIP IN HISPANIC LANGUAGE & LINGUISTICS, Department of Spanish and
Portuguese, University of California, Santa Barbara.
The position is one of Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment
(PSOE), which although not a ladder faculty position with research
obligations, is a potentially permanent position, equivalent to
tenure-track. Responsibilities include (1) coordinating a large language
program in Spanish and Portuguese with approximately 100 language classes
per year taught by some 40 TAs and temporary lecturers; (2) the training
and supervision of instructors; (3) textbook selection, testing, grading,
and other aspects of the language program; (4) teaching an appropriate
number of courses, including a graduate course in teaching methodology
required of all new TAs, and advanced undergraduate language courses such
as Spanish for native speakers, advanced Spanish grammar and composition,
and courses in Hispanic linguistics.
Ph.D. in an area of Hispanic Studies, Applied Linguistics, or Teaching
Methodology is required by time of appointment. Native or near-native
fluency in Spanish required; knowledge of or fluency in Portuguese a plus.
Familiarity with emerging technology and commitment to multimedia delivery
of language instruction highly desirable. Expertise or previous experience
in language teaching methodology, language acquisition or other area of
linguistics preferred. Appointment effective July 1, 1998. Salary
comparable to ladder track position, commensurate with qualifications and
experience.

Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Field of Linguistics at Cornell University welcomes candidates in the
area of sociolinguistics for a one-year Mellon Postdoctoral
teaching-research fellowship, beginning July 1998, stipend $30,000.
Postdoctoral fellows teach one course per semester. Applicants must have
received the Ph.D. degree after September 1992. The research interests of
the candidate should engage one or more additional core areas of
linguistics, such as (but not limited to) language change, pragmatics,
anthropological linguistics, language and gender. Candidates should have a
proven commitment to research in a particular language
or language area.
