We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

I am whether anyone out there can help answer a question for me. Is
there a profession, realm of study, etc. for individuals who want to
study/focus upon writing systems and their history?

Thank you,
Richard Tuttle

Subject: Qs: origin augmentativ/pejorative suffixes

Hello everybody!

Since there have been some problems with my message, here again my
question. Those of you who already answered and helped me: Thank you
very much! I will wait for a summary till I get a few more answers!

In my dissertation I am dealing with the development of diminutives,
augmentatives, pejoratives in the Romance languages. Since I don't
want to work unidimensionally I am very very interested in the
universal meaning, origin etc. of augmentative/pejorative elements.
In the Romance languages these suffixes derive from suffixes
indicating originally resemblence, origin, relation. I would like to
know if this is the case also for other languages. So, if anyone of
you out there could give me some informations or bibliographical
indications about these elements/suffixes in other languages than
Romance worldwide ( afro-asiatic, amerindian languages etc .) I would
be very happy. It would help me a lot!

Thank you!

Subject: Q: Writing abstracts

Hi. We want to organize a workshop on "writing successful abstracts
for (linguistic) conferences" for our graduate students. Is anything
available on the Internet or elsewhere, especially suited for the
linguistic sciences?

Any advice much appreciated. Please reply directly to me; I will post
a summaryif there is sufficient material.
