*** 9/22/97: This is an updated version of an earlier announcement
posted to the list. Please note the addition of one area of

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Delaware is seeking
an Assistant Professor, tenure track, with a specialization in one or
more of the following areas: computational linguistics, semantics,
syntax, theoretical second language acquisition.

The individual will be expected to contribute to the current strengths
of the department in theoretical linguistics, and to the integration
of Linguistics and Cognitive Science (including researchers in the
following areas: Psychology, Computer Science, Philosophy,
Neuroscience, Educational Studies, Applied Science and Engineering
Laboratory). The successful candidate will teach graduate and
undergraduate level courses in his/her area, as well as some
undergraduate service courses. The position will begin September 1,
1998. Ph.D. is required by time of appointment.

Interested candidates should send: a letter of application detailing
how they meet the position description, CV, samples of
research/publications, the names of three referees. The candidate
should also ask the referees to send letters of recommendation
directly to the Search Committee. All application material, including
recommendations, should be received by December 10, 1997.

Linguistic Society, Boston University Conference on Language

Position in TESL/Applied Linguistics, Iowa State

Program in TESL/Applied Linguistics in the English Department at Iowa
State University announce a tenure-track Assistant Professor
position. The faculty member will participate in an M.A. TESL/Applied
Linguistics program, an interdisciplinary B.A. program in linguistics,
and a proposed Ph.D. program in applied linguistics (AL). Applicants
should have a potential for excellence in classroom research and
computer-assisted language learning.  Expertise in one or more of the
following is also desirable: distance learning, language for specific
purposes, K-12 ESL/EFL,curriculum design, program, administration,
literacy. Duties will include: teaching undergraduate courses in ESL
and linguistics and graduate courses in TESL and AL; supervising
TESL/AL theses; serving on graduate committees in TESL/AL and other
areas; and contributing to TESL/AL program development.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:  Ph.D.

PROPOSED START DATE:  August 16, 1998

SALARY:  Commensurate with qualifications.
