			ANNOUNCEMENT

A new mailing list (yes, yet another one) has been created to discuss
some ideas which seem to get the short shrift constantly.

The list is intended to serve several purposes.

1. The list is yet another language evolution/change/variation list.
We already have a Nostratic list; a LanguageEvolution list, and other
language lists. So why another one? The list is created as a sort of
an "overflow" list for topics which do not seem to get discussed
thoroughly on these lists and other lists. For other reasons, see
below.

2. The list is about "quantitative methods" in language change,
evolution, and variation. Obviously as can be seen, there is no
difference until we can clearly see a difference between words like
evolution, change, development, or variation until we can clearly
specify what they are. The list will also discuss how we might go
about differentiating between these concepts if necessary.

3. The list, unlike many other lists in the social sciences in which
arguments take place mostly about various views of the various
schools, will do more than simply allow discussants from various
schools to pontificate. We will organize collective learning. This can
be done by going over books which deal with quantitative methods, and
also discuss linguistics books such as that of Ringe, or Dixon and do
it in such a way that we can learn sufficient mathematics to be able
to understand what is being said. The books by Ringe, and Dixon are
simple examples.  We can discuss other books and other related
topics. Such cooperative efforts have been tried successfully on other
lists; for example, the Chaos List for the Life Sciences discusses
nonlinearity and chaos. At this point the mailing list will be
"reading" a book on nonlinearity with each chapter being "lead" or
"introduced" by a "facilitator" of sorts. These facilitators are
volunteers from the list. We can do similar things here.

4. The list, unlike many other lists in the social sciences, is not
moderated. However, it is not for fluff or useless flaming.  At the
same time, it is not intended that this list replace the
Nostratic_list, Language_Evolution list,Language and Brain List or the
Linguist or any other linguistics list. Although the list is not
moderated subscribers will be expected to adhere to standards of
discussion displayed on science lists, and not turn this list into a
highly politicized free-for-all list. Rules for posting will be sent
to the subscribers regularly. Logical fallacies should be pointed
out. As soon as the list starts up, we will discuss the
basics/fundamentals and which parts of "quantitative" thinking we
should discuss first, which book we should discuss as well as norms
and rules to follow. Since summer is around the corner it would be
good if during the next few weeks we can iron out the kinks so that we
can concentrate on the core material during the summer.

5.1. continuity vs discontinuity
5.2. probability theory (Ringe)
5.3. math models of language, difference equations, differential
	equations
5.4. measurements, measurement theory, etc
5.5. distance, similarity, analogy
5.6. nonlinearity, complexity
5.7. correlation, regression, and other probability related concepts
5.8. system theoretic concepts such as intensive vs extensive
	variables
5.9. biological evolution

and many others can be illustrated with examples. Books/articles and
ideas by Lass, Dixon, Trask, Ringe, Nichols and others will/can be
discussed.
