Chicago State University
The Department of English at the Chicago State University
announces four tenure-track positions at the Assistant or Associate
Professor level. Successful candidates in all four areas, African
American Literature, Professional and Technical Writing, Secondary
Teaching in English, and Creative Writing must have (1) an earned
doctorate by or before August 31, 1998, (2) experience teaching at the
university level, (3) experience working with students of diverse
cultures. In addition to teaching relevant courses, the candidates
selected for the positions in Secondary Teaching, and in Professional
and Technical Writing will also coordinate those programs. Applicans
with a strong background and experience in multiple areas are
especially encouraged to apply.

Subject: Esl positions in Mexico city
We have an ongoing need for Esl/Efl teachers interested in teaching
business english to executives in Mexico city.
Course start dates: Courses commence daily or weekly during the year,
there are no fixed schedules in that we custom design each course to
our clients specific requirements, which include the schedule and
start date.
Duration: Courses run approximately 4 to 5 months after which teachers
are immediately assigned to a new course.
Class locations: Classes are taught at our clients premises, traveling
to and from the classes is required.
Work visa: We sponsor teachers staying one year or longer. Normally
teachers are assigned courses within 2 weeks of their arrival in
Mexico City.
There is a great demand for native English speaking teachers in
Mexico. Most teachers are able to supplement their income teaching

Applications are sought for an appointment in the field of Indonesian
linguistics. The position is available from 1 September 1998.
Applicants should have a PhD, publications and field experience in
Indonesian linguistics. The appointee will contribute to the Department's
program of field research on the Austronesian language family and to
interdisciplinary studies of language and society undertaken by members of
the Division of Society and Environment. The Department's Indonesian focus
is chiefly in eastern Indonesia, defined as the region from Sulawesi to
Irian Jaya.
The appointee will be expected to share in the supervision of doctoral
students and in the editing and refereeing of MSS submitted to the book
series, Pacific Linguistics, which the Deparment publishes.

Subject: Computational Linguistics
Position Announcement
The Division of Computational Linguistics in the Dept. of Linguistics
at the University of Tuebingen, Germany is seeking applications for
two externally-funded research positions.
The research projects will focus on the following tasks:
1. Application of finite-state and context-free techniques for natural
language parsing, text annotation and document conversion.
2. Conversion of dictionaries into on-line accessible SGML/HTML
documents and adaption of bilingual dictionaries (English-German and
French-German) for on-line translation assistance.
Applicants should have expertise and research experience in one or
more of the following areas:
finite-state parsing
document conversion into SGML/HTML
computational lexicography
and have solid programming experience in one or more of the
following:
C++/STL
CGI Programming
Scripting Languages (Perl, etc)
Java/Java Script.
The positions are at the rank of "Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter"
(M.A.,M.Sc., Diplom or Ph.D. required). The salary is on the German
payscale of BAT IIa (minimum of 65 000 DM per year).
Current funding for the two positions will extend until December 31,
1999 -- with the possibility of renewal for at least one position
beyond 1999. Successful candidates would be expected to take up the
positions as soon as possible.

A sample publication representative of the applicant's research
expertise would be helpful.
