GMS, Gesellschaft fuer multilinguale Systeme mbH, with head office in
Munich (Germany), is a leading developer of machine translation
software.

The GMS language development division is based in Barcelona
(Spain). For the development of new machine translation language pairs
we have 12 immediate job openings. The new candidates will back up the
current team, comprising 27 members, in designing and implementing
formal analysis, transfer, and generation grammars or encoding the
corresponding mono- and bilingual lexicons.

Candidate profiles:

- (Computational) Linguists for grammar development (ref. LING) with:
  * university degree in linguistics or computational linguistics

  * some programming experience; experience in writing formal grammars
for natural languages would be a plus

- Linguists or Translators for lexicon development (ref. LEX) with:
  * university degree in foreign languages
  * interest to work on natural language processing

Languages:

* Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish

Successful candidates should:

* be native speakers of one and have near-native proficiency in
another of the languages mentioned above; additional languages would
be an asset since further language pairs will soon be added
* be willing to work together with the rest of the team
* have good social and communicative abilities
* show perseverance, accuracy and thoroughness

You will join a young, international, and highly motivated team. GMS
does not pursue research but is developing market-ready products. This

The Centre for Cognitive Science (CCS) invites applications for three
three-year EPSRC studentship awards to commence in October 1998. The
studentships will be awarded in one or more of the following topic
areas:

* Natural language generation: architectures and ontologies for text
generation; generating form and content of documents; multimodal
generation; evaluation of generation tools; psychological processes
and representations involved in human discourse production;...

* Large-volume text handling: robust parsing; grammar induction;
data-intensive semantics; finite-state methods for language
  processing; applications: information extraction, text
  categorization, flexible hypertext navigation, ...

* Diagrammatic communication: formal semantics of diagrammatic
notations; learning visual programming languages; cognitive
  effects of multimodal representations, ...

Applicants should have a good honours degree or equivalent in Computer
Science, Computational Linguistics, Linguistics or Psychology.

EPSRC studentships are restricted to UK or EU residents. Residents of
the UK are eligible for fees and a maintenance allowance; other EU

links with CCS. Further information on CCS's research programme can
be found on the CCS home page (http://www.cogsci.ed.ac.uk/) and
information about students and how to apply at
http://www.cogsci.ed.ac.uk/ccs/study/. Further information on Human
