Subject: Computational Ling
The Department of Linguistics at the University of California, San
Diego has an assistant professor, tenure-track position in
computational linguistics beginning academic year 1999-2000.
Candidates must expect to complete a Ph.D. in Linguistics, Computer
Science, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate the relevance of their
research interests to issues in theoretical linguistics; in addition
to the traditional core sub-fields (phonology, syntax, semantics,
pragmatics), possible points of contact include but are by no means
limited to acquisition, discourse/information structure, morphology,
sentence processing, etc. There are no restrictions on theoretical
orientation or methodology. Qualifications include research
productivity, knowledge of theoretical linguistics, and ability to
teach and advise graduate and undergraduate students. Salary will be
commensurate with rank and experience and will be based on current
University of California salary scales. A letter of application, a
curriculum vitae, one research sample (publication or draft) and the

The Linguistics Program of the University of California, Davis, has a
tenure-track opening for an open rank faculty position in
Second-Language Acquisition, beginning Fall 1999. The candidate must
hold a doctorate at time of application, be engaged in a strong
research program in second language acquisition and have experience
teaching professional preparation courses in teaching English as a
second/foreign language. The candidate will be expected to teach five
courses per year on theoretical and applied aspects of second-language
acquisition both on the undergraduate and the graduate level. The

Subject: West African Languages
I am a linguist working at Lonely Planet in Melbourne. I'm looking for
native speakers to provide translations from English in the West
African indigenous languages listed below. I need a small number of
phrases (the traditional greetings, plus 20 or 30 basic phrases) for
an upcoming edition of the Lonely Planet travel guide book to West
Africa. Lonely Planet also plans to publish a West African phrasebook
within the next 2 years, so more work may well be on offer at a later
date.
Languages:
Dioula/Jula/Malinke (of Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso)
Fulfulde/Pulaar (of Senegal)
Malinke (of Mali)
Mandinka (of Gambia)
Akan dialects Twi/Fante (of Ghana)
If anyone can help directly with these languages (or suggest others

Due to the vast array of dialects or regional varieties of these
languages, it will help if you specify which is your specialty.
