Position:	ASSISTANT PROFESSOR (TENURE-TRACK APPOINTMENT)

1.	Proposed Appointment:  Tenure-track appointment.

2.	Available for the Academic Year: 1998-99.

3.	Salary: Placement on the salary schedule is dependent upon academic
preparation and professional experience.

4.	Teaching Load: 12 semester units.

5.	Course Level: Graduate and Undergraduate.

6.	Specific Position Characteristics:  The position is primarily
intended to strengthen the department's offerings in Applied
Linguistics-TESOL. Thus, it is crucial that the successful candidate be
capable of teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses in TESOL.

Deadline for application materials:	March 31, 1998

Qualifications:

1.	Academic Preparation: Candidates with the Ph.D. or nearing completion
of the doctorate may be considered for the appointment.

2.	Teaching or Other Professional Experience:  Preference will be given
to TESL candidates who have demonstrated excellence in teaching, as
evidenced both in the  letters of recommendation and in teaching
evaluations. Strong preference will be given to candidates with some
teaching experience in TESL and the ability to teach courses that meet
the graduate needs of the department, which currently include a graduate
course in testing and evaluation, and various graduate courses in
methods and methodology as well as undergraduate courses in similar
areas, including in bilingualism.  TESOL is a component of the
Linguistics Department and the strength of the program lies in its
ability to relate the knowledge of language to the teaching of
language.  Thus, an additional requirement is the ability to teach
introductory level courses, such as the structure of language (Ling 10),
and the structure of English (Ling 134).

Subject:  Postdoc computational semantics

The European Langauge Engineering project TRINDI (Task oriented
instructional dialogue) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in the
area of computational dialogue semantics.  The position is for 24
months (with the possibility of an extension depending on funding and
how soon the position is taken up) and is available immediately.
Applicants should be able to start work within the next six months.
The successful candidate will work at the Linguistics Department at
the University of Gothenburg together with the coordinator of the
project, Robin Cooper,  Elisabet Engdahl, also at Gothenburg,  and in
close collaboration with the other partners (Edinburgh University
(Moens, Poesio), Saarbracken University (Pinkal), SRI Cambridge
(Pulman, Milward) and Xerox Research Centre Europe (Karttunen,
Zaenen)).  Tasks and themes on which he or she will collaborate
include:
	a computational model of dialogue dynamics
	information structure in dialogue dynamics
	robust processing of dialogue
	project management

The candidate will be joining an active new research group in
computational semantics and dialogue semantics and there will be

20 000 -- 25 000 SEK per month.
