ASL and ASL/English Interpreting
The Linguistics Program at the University of Southern Maine invites
applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position. This
individual will assume teaching and administrative duties in the
Program's ASL and ASL/English interpreting track. The successful
candidate will be responsible for developing a first rate program in
ASL interpreting, while forging collaborative relationships with other
programs in the northeast. The USM program has a statewide
responsibility and the candidate should be prepared to develop and/or
exploit innovative approaches to making excellent ASL and interpreter
training available throughout Maine. The Linguistics Program
maintains an active laboratory, has produced two recent books, and won
substantial funding from NSF. The ideal candidate will be prepared to
become an active contributor to the linguistic and psycholinguistic
work of the lab, in addition to offering coursework on ASL
linguistics. A PhD in linguistics or a relevant discipline is
required, as well as native or near-native fluency in ASL. Candidates
should have at least five years paid interpreting experience and hold
RID CI/CT/CDI or NAD Level 5 Certification.
Portland offers proximity to the scholarly and cultural resources of
Boston (less than 2 hours drive to the south) as well as the
recreational attractions of the Maine coast.

Vassar College, a prestigious, private liberal arts college located in
the beautiful Hudson Valley (approximately two hours by train from New
York City), is pleased to announce an opening for a Japanese Language
Fellow (Intern) for the 1998-99 academic year (late August, 1998,
through late May, 1999.)
The responsibilities of the language fellow involve a work load of
twelve hours a week, including some drill sessions. It is also
expected that the language fellow will participate in the Japanese
language table which meets over dinner once a week in the dining hall.
The Language Fellow, who must be a native speaker of Japanese, works
closely assisting two full-time faculty members in the instruction of
Japanese. Language Fellows receive free room and board on the Vassar
campus in student dormitories for the academic year (except during the
winter and spring breaks when the dining hall is closed), a $450 per
month stipend (10 months), and may take up to two courses per semester
free at Vassar. Language Fellows should have a B.A., as well as a
good command of the English language so they may benefit from the
opportunity to enroll in Vassar courses. Transportation to and from
the U.S. is not included. Vassar is an equal opportunity/affirmative
