Applications are invited for Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
MA studentships for 1998-1999.  Candidates must be British or European
Union residents and hold, or expect to hold, by October 1998, a minimum
of an upper second class honours undergraduate degree or the equivalent.

One guaranteed ESRC studentship is available:

       MA in Language Acquisition

An additional studentship is available through national competition on
any one of the following seven MA degrees in Applied Linguistics:

       MA in Applied Linguistics

       MA in Applied Linguistics with Reference to:
             ELT
             ESOL
             ESP
             ELT and Materials Development
             ELT, CALL and Educational Technology
             FLT (Spanish, French, German, Arabic or Japanese)

All MA degrees can be completed in either 9-months/one-year (on a
full-time basis) or up to 3 years (on a part-time basis).

The Department of Linguistics and English Language is also recognised by
the ESRC in the areas of Applied Linguistics and Language Acquisition
for the awarding of the PhD.  (The department awards the PhD in
theoretical linguistics as well.)

                       Tenure Track Position
                          available at the
                  Graduate Institute of Linguistics
                   National Chung Cheng University


The Graduate Institute of Linguistics at National Chung Cheng University
in Chia-Yi, Taiwan, has a tenure track position in semantics and
pragmatics available starting August 1, 1998.  The position is open rank,
but scholars who are qualified to be appointed at the rank of full
professor are preferred.  Candidates must have solid research records in
Chinese linguistics.  A background in corpus/computational linguistics is
a plus.  Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand by June 1998 in order to be
appointed to the position by August 1, 1998.  Salary will be commensurate
with rank and experience.  The annual salary is about NT$964,000 for a
first year assistant professor, NT$1,001,000 for a first year associate
professor, and NT$1,178,000 for a first year full professor.  (Previous
teaching and research experience can be counted toward the salary scale in
all three ranks.)  Please send a letter of application, along with a C.V.,
a statement of research goals, three letters of recommendation, and copies
of major publications to:
