 THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG

Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Linguistics

Applications are invited for appointment as Associate
Professor/Assistant Professor (2 posts) in the Department of
Linguistics, tenable from September 1, 1998 or as soon as possible
thereafter, subject to availability of funding.  Appointment will
initially be made on a fixed-term basis of three years, with a
possibility of renewal.

The current work of the Department of Linguistics concentrates mainly
on the areas of language corpora construction, compilation of grammars
and dictionaries, Chinese linguistics, contrastive linguistics,
language typology, bilingualism, pidgin and creole linguistics,
conversation analysis, optimality theory, and the study of clitics.
The range of languages on which research is being done includes
Chinese, Cantonese, Chiuchow (Chaozhou), English, Finnish, Ndebele,
Nootka, and Dagaare, among others.  Two suitable candidates are
therefore being sought, one of whom should have specialization in
Phonology and the other in Syntax.  Applicants should have a Ph.D. in
Linguistics.  In addition, they should have teaching and/or research
experience in at least one of the following areas: Linguistic Theory,
Morphology, Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics and Chinese
Linguistics.  For appointment at Associate Professor level, applicants
must have substantial teaching experience and a strong record of
research and publication.  Appointees will be required to contribute
to the teaching of existing courses in the Department, offer courses
in their areas of expertise, to supervise research postgraduate
students and pursue an active programme of research and publication.
Applicants for appointment as Associate Professor should indicate
whether they wish to be considered for appointment at Assistant
Professor level as well.

Annual salaries [attracting 15% (taxable) terminal gratuity] are on
the following scales, with starting salary depending on qualifications
and experience:

Associate Professor (in the grade of Senior Lecturer):	
HK$812,220 - 1,091,100 (9 points)
(approx. GBP63,855 - 85,780)

Assistant Professor (in the grade of Lecturer):	
HK$522,780 - 873,360 (11 points) *
 (approx. GBP41,100 - 68,660)

(sterling equivalents as at February 23, 1998)

*An appointee with an annual salary at HK$698,520 (approx. GBP54,915)
or above may be considered for the award of the title of Associate
Professor.

At current rates, salaries tax will not exceed 15% of gross income.
The appointment carries leave, medical and dental benefits, an
allowance for children's education in Hong Kong, and, in most cases, a
financial subsidy for private tenancy may also be provided at a charge
of a percentage of salary, currently 7.5%.
