ASSOCIATE PROFESSORSHIP
LANGUAGE EDUCATION AND LINGUISTIC
MINORITY STUDENTS
The Graduate School of Education, University of
California, Berkeley, seeks a specialist in the education of
language minority students with broad knowledge of the
area of educational linguistics for an associate
professorship with tenure, pending budgetary approval, to
begin in July 1998. The individual selected for this position
will be affiliated with an interdisciplinary group focused on
language and literacy development and education, and
would help that group expand its work on the education of
linguistic minority students. Since language figures
prominently in most areas of education, that individual
should be prepared to work with students and faculty in
other areas of schooling as well; for example, on issues
related to the role of language in mathematics and science
education; to cognitive and social development in bilingual
children; and language policy or testing in education. In
particular, the position will deal with linguistics issues in
the education of diverse language minority students, and
with the preparation of teachers to work with such students
in American schools.
Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in
education, linguistics, educational linguistics, applied
linguistics, or a closely related area, and should be able to
demonstrate excellence in research and teaching. Teaching
and research experience in the American public school
system is highly desirable. Candidates should be prepared
to teach graduate level courses in research on language
teaching and learning, as well as teacher education courses
with a focus on bilingual issues and various school subjects
(e.g., math, science, reading and writing, social studies,
etc.) to language minority students (e.g., Latino, Asian,
American Indian, etc.). In addition, candidates should
expect to play an active role in the development of the
School's research and instructional programs, and to
collaborate with colleagues throughout the School in
scholarly and service activities.

The task of the Recording Operator includes:
? Creating, enhancing and extending acoustic databases for Mexican and
other varieties of American Spanish
? Assisting in speaker recruitment through local contacts
? Running recording sessions; explaining procedures in English or
Spanish and operating recording hardware and software
? Assessing recording quality during recording sessions
? Possibly setting up the recording station off-site; troubleshooting
hardware and software problems
Requirements:
? Native level knowledge of Spanish, esp. Mexican Spanish
? Experience with Windows 95 and software such as Word and Excel.
Experience with recording or sound editing software or DOS is an
advantage.
? Able to work independently and remain attentive to detail over long
periods of time
? Enjoy working with people; able to make them feel at ease
? Knowledge of linguistics or an interest in languages is an advantage.

Spanish is available at Lernout & Hauspie?s Berkeley office for the
Linguistic Resources Department.
The task of the lexicographer includes:
? Creating, enhancing and extending lexical databases for Mexican
Spanish. The lexical databases will have to contain at least:
orthographic representation, phonetic transcriptions, PoS,
inflectional codes, lemma information; it is expected that more detailed
grammatical information will be required in the near future.
? Keeping track of what Spanish lexical databases exist outside the
company and contributing to the acquisition of these if necessary
? Keeping track of what Spanish lexical databases are available within
the company
? (Contributing to) development of tools and programs to (partially)
automate these tasks
Requirements:
? Native level knowledge of Spanish, esp. Mexican Spanish
? an MA with a background in linguistics or lexicography is preferred;
good knowledge of grammatical concepts and of phonetics
? Experience with DOS, Windows 95, and software such as Word and Excel.
Experience with Access or other database packages is an advantage.
? Knowledge of programming preferred (awk, Visual Basic)
? Detail-oriented and conscientious worker
