JOB OPPORTUNITY: A PROFESSORSHIP IN LINGUISTICS AT KYOTO UNIVERSITY
1. The post:
Professor or Associate Professor.
2. The appointment will be made in:
The Department of Language Activities in Cultural Environments,
The Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies, Kyoto University.
3. Field:
Linguistics (areas such as Linguistic Theory, Language and Culture, and
Language and Society)
The aim of the department being to accommodate students studying a wide
variety of languages, it is expected that the applicant will be able to
teach linguistics from a broad perspective. That is to say, the applicant
should be able to cover studies in Language and Culture, Language and
Society, and Language and Thought as well as the traditional core areas of
Linguistics.
4. Teaching responsibilities:
(1) Ph.D. course: Language in Cultural Environments I, II, and the
corresponding Seminars
MA. course: Language in Cultural Environments, and the
corresponding Seminar
(2) Undergraduate courses (in linguistics and/or related areas)
(3) Courses in Foreign Languages
5. The appointment is scheduled to begin 1 April, 1999.

acceptable)
(4) 200-word summaries in Japanese, one for each of the books or papers.

Position for Foreign Professor
The Master's Program in Education at the University of Tsukuba is seeking
applicants for a position as a non-tenure-track foreign professor in either
applied linguistics (TESL) or the psychology of language. The applicant
should be a native speaker of English. Appointment begins on April 1, 1999.
Contract: Two years (extendable two more years, if the candidate proves
satisfactory and other colleges give approval). For more details, please

Duties: Teach graduate courses in TESL, psycholinguistics, comparative

Minimum Annual Salary: approximately \6,000,000 or more (depending on

in Oxford has a vacancy for a Computational Linguist to work on
commercial projects in translation, information extraction and
retrieval.
Applicants should have:
* Excellent programming skills (C/C++, Perl, Java)
* Good degree in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics or
equivalent
* Postgraduate qualification/experience in relevant areas
The ability to offer one or more of the following would be extremely
useful:
* Knowledge of statistical techniques/corpus processing techniques
* Knowledge of finite-state techniques
* Knowledge of sense disambiguation techniques
* Familiarity with speech processing
