Subject:  Chinese Headlines

I am a postgraduate student in Hong Kong and my project is the
sociolinguistic study of Chinese News headlines. However, there are
not many literatures on the linguistic study of News headlines (esp
Chinese).  Even the study of English news headlines is rare too. I
just know that there are several books which study headlines (English)
extensively. But I wonder that whether they are out of print. Here are
the info of the 2 books:

Evans, H. (1974). News Headlines. Heinemann.  Straumann,
H. (1935). Newspaper Headlines. Allen & Unwin.

If anyone knows any literature on Chinese news headlines, pls forward
the info to me.

I have attempted to find analyses of the passive construction in the
Minimalist Program but can't seem to find much. I would appreciate any
pointers to relevant works and will be happy to sum up the results for
the list.

Subject:  Vietnamese children acquiring tones

I am writng this on behalf of a colleague of mine who is doing
research on bilingual Vietnamese/Norwegian childen less than 10 years
old.

As some monolingual children have problems with reading and writing,
so do also some bilingual children. In order to describe problems for
bilingual children with four different sets of languages, one them
being Vietnamese-Norwegian, my colleague needs to know what is
'normal'.

She want to know: When do Vietnamese children master the tone system?

That is: When do they act properly when they in front of a sett of
pictures as outlined in the situation below, what is the average
minimum age for children to perform this task correctly:

Situation A:

	(Set of pictures lying on the table. This is just an
example. There might be more suitable pictures)

	{Ghost}	{Mother}	{Grave}	{Horse}	{Rice plant}

		 Ma    o+? dda^u ?
		 Ma/  o+? dda^u ?
		 Ma?  o+? dda^u ?
		 Ma~  o+? dda^u ?
		 Ma.  o+? dda^u ?

Are there any differences between monolingual Vietnamese speaking
children in Vietnam, and bilingual Vietnamese/X-LANG speaking
children?

Does something like an "Encyclopedic Dictionary of Linguistics" exist.
