ASL and ASL/English Interpreting (Revised)

The Linguistics Program at the University of Southern Maine invites
applications for a tenure track appointment at the Assistant or
Associate Professor level, depending upon experience. This individual
will assume teaching and administrative duties in the Program's ASL
and ASL/English interpreting track. The successful candidate will be
responsible for developing a first rate program in ASL interpreting,
while forging collaborative relationships with other programs in the
northeast. The USM program has funding to assume a statewide
responsibility and the candidate should be prepared to develop and/or
exploit innovative approaches to making excellent ASL and interpreter
training available throughout Maine. The Linguistics Program
maintains an active laboratory, has produced two recent books, and won
substantial funding from NSF. The ideal candidate will be prepared to
become an active contributor to the linguistic and psycholinguistic
work of the lab, in addition to offeri! ng coursework on ASL
linguistics. A PhD in linguistics or a relevant discipline is
required, as well as native or near-native fluency in ASL. Candidates
should have at least five years paid interpreting experience and hold
RID CI/CT/CDI or NAD Level 5 Certification.

Portland offers proximity to the scholarly and cultural resources of
Boston (less than 2 hours drive to the south) as well as the
recreational attractions of the Maine coast.

Review of applications will begin May 15 and will continue until the
position is filled. Applicants should send a letter, CV, and names
and contact information for three references to Prof. Wayne Cowart,
Linguistics Program, University of Southern Maine, P.O. Box 9300,
Portland, ME, 04104-9300. Final approval of this position is
contingent upon availability of funding. USM is an EEO/AA employer
committed to diversity, quality and reasonable accomodation.

Job Announcement

Temporary Position in Semantics at UCLA

The UCLA Department of Linguistics solicits applications for a
one-year replacement position in Formal Semantics, during the coming
academic year (1998-99). (It is possible, though by no means certain,
that a permanent position will become open in 1999-2000.)

We are looking for someone to teach courses at the undergraduate and
graduate levels. Undergraduate courses would probably include an
introduction primarily to semantics and at least one additional course
in another area (for example, introduction to Linguistics, or
syntax). The graduate courses would include a survey course on
semantic theory and an advanced seminar course on current research.
Aside from teaching classes, the position would also involve advising
graduate students.

The rank of this position is open, though preference will be given to
candidates at the Assistant Professor level.

Candidates should send a CV, samples of work, and names and addresses
of three referees to:

     Tim Stowell, Chair,
     UCLA Department of Linguistics,
     Los Angeles, CA, 90095-1543

We will attempt to fill this position before the end of April 1998;
candidates whose applications are received prior to April 15 are
assured of the fullest consideration.

Because of the relatively late announcement of this position, and the
possibility of mail delays, it is highly recommended that applicants
send a brief e-mail message stating their interest in this position to
stowell at ucla.edu

UCLA is an equal opportunity employer.
