ZHONGHUA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 1998:
UPDATE (3/23/98)

	Here's the last update for the Zhonghua Scholarship Program
before the application deadline (4/1/97 by post mark or fax). A brief
description for the Scholarship is attached at the end of this message
for those who missed the announcement. You can also contact WCCEC
directly for the original announcement and earlier updates.  COLLEGE
CREDITS: Since this is a scholarship that requires no financial
responsibility from U.S. colleges and universities, it depends on the
individual school to decide whether or not the credits will be
accepted.  It is most likely, however, to be exempted from certain
courses due to the increase of proficiency in Chinese after learning
Chinese in China for one year. Those who would like to prove their
Chinese proficiency to their home school can take a proficiency test
through WCCEC, which will also provide an official letter in support
of such an effort.  ARRANGEMENTS FOR APPLICANTS WITH DEPENDENTS:
Recipients who are married can bring their spouses with them at their
own expenses. Housing will be provided by the host school in China. It
is the responsibility of the recipient for other living expenses and
medical insurance.  Since such expenses may differ from place to
place, it is not clear at this stage how much it will be. Spouses who
are also native speakers of English, if qualified, are encouraged to
apply for the scholarship as well.  ORIENTATION PROGRAM: The one-week
orientation program, required by host institutions in China, is
designed to help scholarship recipients prepare for a more fruitful
stay in China and to help them adjust quickly in a foreign culture
upon their arrival. Lectures by invited speakers include "Cultural
issues in language learning", "Teaching EFL in China", "Language
proficiency and language learning", and "Language learning framework
and self-managed learning".  Among the briefings given at the
Orientation are the various issues related to the country's education
system, tourism, local geography, linguistic typography, customs and
culture, legal issues for foreigners, methodology in language
learning, living in China, and so on. A Chinese proficiency test will
be administered and EFL teaching practicum will be arranged during the
Orientation. Accommodation during the training and all materials will
be provided for all registered participants.

========== ZHONGHUA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (ZSP) ==========

The ZSP, jointly established by the Cross-Culture Education Center of
Washington (WCCEC) and educational institutions in China, is a
scholarship program open to all native speakers of English who are
interested in various aspects of China and the Chinese language. There
is no restriction on the applicant's nationality, school affiliation,
program and major, or Chinese language proficiency. The scholarship
offers an opportunity for the recipient to live in China from
September every year to July of the following year.  Each recipient is
provided with (a) round-trip travel expenses (US departure point to
destination); (b) room and board; (c) medical insurance during the
scholarship period; (d) a monthly stipend (equal to the monthly salary
of a local university professor); (e) a paid vocation in winder during
the Chinese New Year; and (f) a paid cultural tour at the end of the

The San German Campus of the Inter American University of Puerto Rico
has a probable opening for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of
English, beginning in August 1998.  Required: Ph.D. in English,
Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, or a related field.  Primary
teaching responsibility in composition and ESL, but must also be able
to teach advanced courses in one or more of the following areas: TESL,
writing theory, CALL, literature, linguistics, speech.  15
hrs/semester plus committee work.  $33k/yr.  Send letter, c.v., three
