RESEARCH ASSISTANT
Researcher A (Fixed Term, 3 years)
11562 - 13101 UK. pounds per annum (pro rata) depending on age,
qualifications and experience.
The University of Wolverhampton, School of Languages and European
Studies wish to appoint a research assistant to work on anaphora
resolution project. The duties will focus on the development and
implementation of a robust, knowledge-poor pronoun resolution
approach.
We are looking for researchers with proven experience in NLP and with
excellent programming skills. The successful candidate will have a
first degree in Computational Linguistics or Computer
Science. Appointees may register for a Ph.D. or an M.Phil. on a
part-time basis.
The successful candidate is expected to start the job as soon as
possible but no later than 1 September 1998.

The Linguistics Department, University of Wales, Bangor is offering a
TRAINING-GRADE TUTORIAL ASSISTANTSHIP, with effect from 1 September
1998. The appointment will be for three years (one year in the first
instance, renewable for a further two years). The salary will be 7000
per annum in the first year, rising to 7500. The Tutorial Assistant
will be able to register for a higher degree without paying fees and
will receive full supervision.
The Tutorial Assistant will be required to teach 4/5 hours per week,
for the most part in small-group tutorials, although there may be
opportunities for a limited number of lectures. In the academic year
1998-99, the Tutorial Assistant will be required to take UWB's highly
regarded Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education.

Training-Grade Tutorial Assistantship: Further Particulars of Post
We intend to appoint with effect from 1 September 1998 a
training-grade tutorial assistant. The appointment will be for three
years (one year in the first instance, renewable for a further two
years, subject to satisfactory performance). The salary will be 7000
per annum in the first year, rising to 7500. As a full-time members
of staff, the tutorial assistant will be able to register for a higher
degree without paying fees and will receive full supervision.
The successful candidates will be required to teach 4-5 hours per
week, for the most part in small group tutorials, though there may be
opportunities for a limited number of lectures. He or she will be
expected to assist in the assessment process. There will be an
appropriate level of guidance and support and in the academic year
1998-99 the Tutorial Assistant will be required to follow UWB's highly
regarded Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education.
The post is particularly suitable for a candidate who has completed or
is near completing an M.A., M.Phil, or similar degree, but who has not
secured funding. The package is designed to produce a highly
employable academic, who will have both a higher degree and a
qualification and experience in teaching in British higher
education. Research topics should fall within one of the Department's
recognised areas of research strength: syntax, pragmatics or language
acquisition.
Short-listed candidates will be invited to Bangor for interview in
May/June and will be asked to give a 20-minute presentation on a topic
of their choice (this could relate either to proposed or current
research or to teaching). Candidates will be asked to discuss the
contributions they could make to the teaching in the Department. The
closing date for applications is 15th May 1998.
Person Profile'
The person appointed will have:
a good first degree or equivalent in linguistics or a related
field and a postgraduate qualification in linguistics and some
research training. Knowledge of statistics would be an advantage;
a well-defined proposal for research, in the area of syntax,
pragmatics or language acquisition, broadly defined;
an interest in university teaching, and the ability to relate
well to students new to the field;
the ability to conduct tutorials at Part I and to contribute
to Part II teaching. There may be the opportunity to contribute a Part
II module in later years;
willingness to play a full part in the life of the Department:
participation in the weekly Research Seminar, participation in
Gregynog (the annual conference for linguists across the University of
Wales), and attendance at Departmental Open Days;

TEMPORARY LECTURESHIP (A) IN
GENERATIVE GRAMMAR AND GENERAL LINGUISTICS
The Department of English, The University of Queensland
invites applications for a temporary appointment in
the area of Generative Grammar and General Linguistics.
PERIOD OF APPOINTMENT: 6 months (July to December, 1998)
DUTIES: The principal responsibility will be to teach
an undergraduate subject in Generative Grammar (GB theory;
text: Haegeman L. "Introduction to Government & Binding Theory").
Some tutoring and lectures in an introductory General
Linguistics subject will be required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: The appointee should possess
appropriate teaching experience in the area. The position may
suit a recent graduate in Linguistics or a near-to-completion
postgraduate.
SALARY: In the range of $33,512 to $45,456 per annum,
depending upon qualifications and experience.
