IV. Background:
The CKIP research group has been involved in fundamental
theoretical research as well as infrastructure-building work in
Chinese NLP for over the past 12 years. It has produced the first
Chinese electronic lexicon for NLP, the first tagged and balanced
corpus of Mandarin Chinese (the 5 million word Sinica Corpus), and
over one hundred scholarly papers. All five previous post-doctoral
fellows with CKIP now hold tenure-track positions with national
universities in Taiwan. Previous successful applicants received
their Ph.D.'s from the following international universities: Ohio
State University, Stanford University, University of Colorado,
University of Paris VII, and UMIST.

& Phonology in the Department of Linguistics, which will become available
in September 1999 following the retirement of Alan Cruttenden. Applications
will be considered from those specializing in any area of phonetics and/or
phonology. A strong research and publications record is essential. The
successful candidate will also be expected to provide research leadership
in the whole area of phonetics and phonology and to enhance the
department's research income in this field.

and to supervise doctoral students. Headship of the Department rotates
among the senior members of staff and can be expected to fall to the
Professor of Phonetics and Phonology in due turn.

soon as possible thereafter. Salary in the range: 16045 - 21894 p.a.
