Lecturer in Japanese Affairs & Culture
Hokkaido University of Education Sapporo (HUES)
Applications are invited for the position of full-time lecturer
(tenure) for Japanese Affairs & Culture (Nihon Jijoo Kyooiku)
beginning 1 September, 1998. The successful candidate will be
expected to teach the course in Japanese Affairs and Culture to
overseas students (mainly from China, Russia, USA, EU) and also to
give lectures on the subject of Cross Cultural Understanding for the
Japanese undergraduate students.
Qualifications:
1)MA in the following related areas:
Area Studies-Japan, Comparative studies in Japanese
language/culture/society/education, Education of
Japanese affairs and culture for overseas students,
Teaching of Japanese as a foreign language.
2)Should be fluent in both Japanese and English,
to be able to give lectures and to participate in
academic discussions.
3)Should be less than forty years of age.

Note that candidates should submit three published academic research
works (papers, thesis) with summary in Japanese for each of them
(around 200 words each) together with the application forms. Also
included with the forms is an assignment which requires the
candidate to give an outline of a one year lecture plan for the class
of Japanese Affairs & Culture for overseas students (mixed nationality
class, beginners to intermediate level of Japanese language
learners) and a one year lecture plan for the course of Cross Cultural
Understanding for the Japanese undergraduate students. No reference
letters are required. The submitted materials will not be returned
unless so requested.

seeks candidates for Visiting Assistant Professor
The Program in TESOL and Applied Linguistics has a one-year visiting
position available for a candidate with a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics
with a research interest in classroom-oriented research and/or second
language pedagogy. Teaching assignments will include participation in
MA level courses in TESOL methodology, applied English phonology and

Subject: Research Assistant Position
FULL-TIME RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITION
Applications are invited for a full-time research assistance position
in a widely recognized lab that conducts research on human-computer
interaction and the design of next-generation multimodal systems. The
research assistant selected will participate in a multidisciplinary,
team-oriented research project investigating people's spoken,
pen-based, and multimodal input to interactive computer systems. This
work is funded by the National Science Foundation, DARPA, and
corporate supporters such as Intel and Microsoft, and is being
conducted in a new state-of-the-art laboratory facility in the Center
for Human-Computer Communication (CHCC) at the Oregon Graduate
Institute of Science and Technology (OGI), which is located in the
Portland metropolitan area 10-15 minutes west of the city.
Applicants with a background and interests in linguistics, cognitive
science, psychology, or human factors are encouraged to
apply. Experience testing and interviewing human subjects, scoring and
analyzing language-oriented data, using data analysis/statistics
software, and performing basic programming for experimental support
would be most relevant to this research position. Experience with MS
Word and software for creating figures for publications also would be
a plus. Prefer applicants with an M.A. or M.S. in one of the
above-listed disciplines, or a B.A. plus 2 years work experience in an
academic or corporate research laboratory. Salary & full benefits

consideration.
