Phonetics & Phonology in the Department of Linguistics, which will
become available in September 1999 following the retirement of Alan

any area of phonetics and/or phonology. A strong research and
publications record is essential. The successful candidate will also
be expected to provide research leadership in the whole area of
phonetics and phonology and to enhance the department's research

Job Description
The appointed candidate will be expected to contribute to the
research, teaching and administration of the Department of
Linguistics. He/she will be required to offer courses at both
undergraduate and postgraduate levels and to supervise doctoral
students. Headship of the Department rotates among the senior members
of staff and can be expected to fall to the Professor of Phonetics and
Phonology in due turn.

of historical linguistics. A strong research record is essential, and
a completed PhD is desirable. Applicants must be able to demonstrate
an interest both in the theoretical study of language change and in
the history of one or more languages and language families. Preference
may be given to candidates whose research relates to the history of a
language or languages other than English. The starting date is 1
September 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary in the range:
16045 - 21894 p.a. (under review). Closing date for applications: 9

Position Announcement
Modern Greek Language
Applications are being accepted for a limited-term position at the
rank of assistant professor, for an appointment commencing September
1, 1998. The position will carry a one or two-year term, subject to
final approval of funding.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach Modern Greek
language at introductory through advanced levels, and a related area
in Linguistics and/or Humanities (Classics). In addition, the
appointee would become a key member of a research team developing
on-line learning materials and a self-instructional language program
for Greek, including an intelligent tutor employing artificial
intelligence techniques. The appointee would be responsible for the
pedagogical design of the materials, and would work closely with
computational linguists and other experts in the overall development
of the system. This project will be carried out in cooperation with
agencies of the Ministry of Education of Greece, and will require
liaison with those agencies, including travel to Greece. The
appointment will be assigned to a department appropriate to the
background of the successful candidate (Linguistics, Humanities or
Interdisciplinary Studies), and will require collaboration with the
Chair of Hellenic Studies.
Candidates should hold a Ph. D. in an area relevant to Greek language
and maintain an active research program in a related area, as well as
have significant experience in teaching Modern Greek. Applicants who
are familiar with recent developments in technologically-assisted
language learning will be preferred, all other qualifications being
