Subject: Criteria for promotion in Linguistics/Foreign Languages

Our university is currently is the process of formulating
a list of criteria to use for deciding promotion within its
departments and centers. I am specifically interested in knowing
what other linguistics or foreign language departments
use as criteria (e.g. number of refereed papers, teaching
load, experience, committee work, and others) in deciding promotion from
assistant to associate professor, and from associate to full professor

Subject: Indo-european fonts for PC

I am planning to switch from Mac to PC. In Mac, I have an excellent font
for comparative linguists - "Indo-European". It contains exactly what a
historical linguist needs: Times-style letters with various diacritis, such
as acutes, macrons, dots under letters and the like. Where can I find a
similar font or fonts for PC?

Thank you. Vladimir Orel (veorel at mail.biu.ac.il)

Subject: Values of Norse futhark

My 10-year-old daughter has taken an interest in learning something of
runic writing.

I have got some information about the Germanic futhark, but what I
have on the phonetic values that the characters represent is
incomplete and inconsistent.

Can someone tell me the transcription values of the elder futhark when
she is reading names of characters in the Norse myths? I think I am
all right with the consonants, but am unclear on some of the vowels,
particularly ansus (a and alse ae as in aesir?) eihwas (ei?) and algis
(oe?).

Please reply off-line. If there is a request for it I will post a
summary, but I suspect this question is not of broad interest in this
forum.

Thanks,

	Bruce Nevin
