                          UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY
                        DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS
                          POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT


Applications are invited for a tenure-track position in Linguistics at
the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 1999.  The applicant
should have a primary specialization  in SYNTACTIC THEORY. A secondary
research interest in one or more of the following areas is highly
desirable: Language Acquisition, Language Disorders,
First Nations Languages, Diachronic Syntax.

Candidates should hold a  Ph.D. in linguistics and have demonstrated
excellence in teaching and research in the area(s) of specialization.
Duties will include undergraduate and graduate teaching, graduate student
supervision,  and conducting original research.

Please send a cover letter, curriculum vitae and samples of published or
unpublished  work, and any additional supporting documents to the address below
before February 28, 1999.  In addition, by that date,  three letters
of recommendation should be sent under separate cover to:
