The Linguistics Program at the University of South Carolina
would like to call your attention to a new program
established here to address the underrepresentation of
African American professors on college campuses.
Sponsored by the University of South Carolina, the
Kellogg Foundation (funding pending), and the South
Carolina Commission on Higher Education, the African
American Professors Program (AAPP) offers students
three years of support in order to complete a doctorate at
the University of South Carolina.  This opportunity is
especially directed at disciplines where African
Americans are currently underrepresented.  An
important component of AAPP will be the mentoring
experience provided.  Each student will be assigned to a
mentor professor who will guide the student through his
or her academic program and provide the student with
varied learning experiences.  The stipend is $15,000 in
the first year, $16,500 in the second year, and $18,000
in the third year.

Potential applicants who have an M.A. in any area and
who are interested in pursuing a doctorate in Linguistics
should apply to the Linguistics Program, and should also
contact the AAPP directly.
