RESEARCHING AND APPLYING METAPHOR III

Tilburg University, 30 June to 2 July 1999

METAPHOR ACROSS LANGUAGES:

TRANSLATION AND INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION,
INCLUDING LITERATURE

CALL FOR PAPERS

Tilburg University is pleased to announce the third
international conference on Researching And Applying
Metaphor from 30 June to 2 July 1999. The conference
will focus on fundamental and applied research on metaphor
across languages, in particular on metaphor in translation
and metaphor in intercultural communication. Moreover, we
would like to include the domain of literature as a special
area of attention, in that it poses problems of translation
and in that it can be seen as an interesting instance of
intercultural communication in more than one respect (see
below). We are hence inviting linguists, psycholinguists,
sociolinguists, discourse analysts, translation theorists
and translators, literary scholars and writers, and
educationalists, to submit proposals for papers on these
topics by December 31, 1998.

Goal

The conference will have a highly informal and practical
character: the main aim is to bring people together from
different linguistic and cultural backgrounds to foster
exchange of information and discussion about metaphor
across languages. This aim was chosen as a result of the
experiences at the previous two RAAM conferences, in which
it was felt that the international study of metaphor was
too much oriented to British and American English. At
the end of RAAM II in Copenhagen (May 1997), it was
concluded that the availability of a new paradigm for
metaphor studies since Lakoff and Johnson's Metaphors We
Live By may have given a tremendous impetus to linguistic
research on metaphor, but a cross-linguistic and
cross-cultural perspective have remained comparatively
underdeveloped. It is the specific purpose of this
conference to alleviate this problem.

Suggestions for topics

Fundamental research:
-	Identification of conceptual metaphors;
-	Identification of linguistic metaphors;
-	Analysis of conceptual metaphors;
-	Analysis of linguistic metaphors.
Including literature:
-	Special difficulties in identifying and analysing
linguistic and conceptual metaphors in literary texts,
	contemporary and historical.

Translation:
-	Linguistic aspects of metaphor influencing translation.
-	Conceptual aspects of metaphor influencing translation.
-	Translation strategies and metaphor translation.
Including literature:
-	Special difficulties in metaphor translation in
	literary texts, contemporary and historical.

Intercultural communication:
-	Conventional metaphor as the cause of or solution to
	intercultural communication problems.
-	Deliberate metaphor as the cause of or solution to
	intercultural communication problems.
-	Metaphor in communication training and intercultural
	settings.
Including literature:
-	Metaphor usage by non-native writers of literature in a
	particular language;
-	Metaphor processing by non-native readers of literature
	in a particular language.

Organization

The goal of the conference requires an organization
that is slightly different. Given the suspected lack of a
critical mass of cross-linguistic and cross- and
intercultural studies of metaphor, it is the conference
itself which will have to reinforce these perspectives by
bringing together speakers from different backgrounds. In
particular, we would like to organize a number of
workshops in which papers on similar topics but from
different linguistic and cultural backgrounds are combined.
It is hoped that the interaction between the speakers
during the conference will create a cross-linguistic and
cross- and intercultural perspective on metaphor.

Procedure

Consequently, we are envisaging the following procedure.
Proposals for papers have to be sent in by December 31,
1998. The program committee will examine the contents of
the proposals in January and put together a provisional
vprogram in which papers are combined in a number of
workshops. Workshops may vary from self-regulating with a
self-appointed chair to tightly organized and
goal-directed with precirculation of papers and/or data,
depending on the state of the research in each of them.
Authors of papers will be notified of the preliminary
program in February and will be asked if they can agree
with their position in the program. If alterations are to
be made to the program, they will be announced by
March 1rst. This will leave ample time for participants in
workshops to prepare their sessions before the conference,
in the form of precirculation of papers, data, and so on.
The program committee will include suggestions for
preparation and approach individuals for taking on some of
the organizational responsibilities per workshop.

Program committee

Lynne Cameron, Peter Crisp, Alice Deignan, Anders Engstr"m,
Charles Forceville, Ray Gibbs, Rachel Giora, Johan Hoorn,
Graham Low, Yeshayahu Shen, and Gerard Steen

Submission of proposals for papers

Proposals for papers should not exceed 300 words and be
submitted electronically by December 31 1998. Please use
the following address: raamiii at kub.nl. The proposal should
give a clear indication of the general area of research
(fundamental, intercultural, or translation, excluding or
including literature). It should also specify how the paper
could contribute to a workshop; in other words, what can
other participants take away from the workshop in which the
paper is presented: a theory, a method of analysis,
data on linguistic metaphor, data on conceptual metaphor,
or applications to particular domains of discourse?
Finally, the proposal should suggest how it can be used
best in a workshop: with prior circulation of the
complete paper, with prior circulation of the central
aspect (like an outline of the theory, method, data, or
application), without prior circulation but with
incorporation in a top-down organized session, or without
prior circulation and top-down organization altogether.

Registration

When the program has been finalized by March 1,
registration forms will be sent out to participants and
posted at the conference website:

(http://cwis.kub.nl/~fdl/general/people/steeng/raamiii/index.htm) for
those who wish to attend the conference but do not give a paper.
