We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

I'm interested in this article:

William C. WAKE
"Statistical methods applied to ancient medical writings"
in
Edwin CLARKE (ed.)
Modern methods in the history of medicine

(London, Athlone Press, 1971, pp. 238-259)

I couldn't find this book in Spain, so if anyone has an exemplar of the book
or a copy of the article, I'll thank him to contact me (nofre at lingua.fil.ub.

I am doing research on pairs of words in languages in which there
is phonetic similarity between the words meaning (1) pit, hole, digging,
to dig, etc and (2) (cooking) pot, pan, kettle, etc.

Two languages in which this happens is

(1) English: pit, pothole vs pot
(2) Turkic: kaz (to dig) vs kazan (cooking pot)

I am curious about other languages. I suspect I found the
reason and it may turn out to be more universal that these two
languages. Please send your email directly to me and I can accumulate
the data and send it to the LInguist if there's interest.
