Bell Labs, the research and development arm of Lucent Technologies is
interested in hiring qualified candidates with a background in
Computational Linguistics to expand its research effort in its
Dialogue Systems Research and Language Modeling Research departments.

Bell Labs has an active research program in areas related to
human-machine communication including: automatic speech recognition
and understanding; human-machine dialogue; text-to-speech synthesis;
document image analysis and conversion; media conversion
(e.g. fax-to-speech). All of this work is done at the main Bell Labs
facility in Murray Hill, New Jersey, USA.

We are particularly interested in interviewing candidates with
research experience in the following areas.

- Statistical language modeling
- Parsing
- Text summarization

WE ANTICIPATE HAVING ABOUT 3 OPENINGS.

CV's and letters of interest can be sent to:

Subject: Text-to-Speech Language Development Manager

Lucent Technologies is seeking applicants for the position of

	Text-to-Speech Language Development Manager

in its newly formed Lucent Speech Solutions organization. This
organization has a range of responsibilities including advanced
product development, product support, sales, and marketing for
Text-to-Speech (TTS) and Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) products.

The key responsibilities of the Manager will including
managing:

- Development of TTS systems for new languages, dialects and voices
  including:

   a) development of concatenative inventories for the new
      language/dialect/voice

   b) development of models of prosody (segmental duration,
      intonation)

   c) development of text-analysis modules for the new
      languages/dialects

- Continued development and maintenance of TTS systems that
are already included in Lucent's product line (including, or soon
to include: English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Mandarin,
  Japanese, Russian)

Naturally it is understood that no individual will have both the
technical skills required plus sufficient mastery of all of the
present or future languages supported in the product line. It is
therefore anticipated that part-time consultants with the necessary
linguistic knowledge will be hired to work under the guidance of the
Manager. This guidance will include training the language
specialist to use our suite of tools (including tools for segmental
duration analysis, concatenative inventory construction and
lexical/text analysis), and supervising the specialist's work.

While knowledge of a specific language or languages is therefore not
required, the following skills are essential:

- A broad knowledge of many areas of linguistics, including phonetics,
  phonology, morphology and computational linguistics.

- A good "feel" for language. The Manager will often be called
upon to provide guidance with linguistic problems in a language that
he or she does not know: he or she must therefore be able to ask the
right kinds of questions of the language specialist in order to
be able to suggest approaches towards a solution.

- Excellent computational skills, including knowledge of scripting
languages (awk, perl ...). A knowledge of C or C++ is a definite
  bonus.

- The ability and willingness to learn new tools.

- Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to supervise
  others.

A PhD in Linguistics or a related discipline is required.

The Manager will work closely with members of the research
staff at Bell Laboratories both in the initial phase when he or she is
learning to use our tools, and at later phases when it is hoped that
he or she will help contribute to the further development of our
toolset.

Applicants should send CV's and statements of interest to

     Joseph Olive, Department Head
     Language Modeling Research Department
     Room 2d-437
     Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies
     Murray Hill, NJ 07974, USA

     E-mail:	jpo at bell-labs.com

Interested candidates are encouraged to familiarize themselves with
our approach to Text-to-Speech synthesis. Technical information, a
subset of our research papers, and on-line demos of some of our
systems, can be found at our website:
http://www.bell-labs.com/project/tts.

It is generally agreed that speech and natural language technology is
going to be a major growth area during the next decade. The Lucent
Speech Solutions organization is well-positioned to capitalize on that
growth. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled and highly
motivated individual to secure a future for him- or herself in this
growing field.
