CONFERENCE AANOUNCEMENT

Poetics and Linguistics: *Discourses of war and conflict*
29 March - 1 April 1999

University of Potchefstroom, Potchefstroom, South Africa

1	General topic

Theme of the conference

This is the centenary year of the Anglo-Boer War in South Africa
(1899-1902), and it was felt that a theme reflecting this in part would
be apposite.

Poetics, Linguistics and History: Discourses of war and conflict

This theme has been formulated with a view to stylistic investigation of
texts in terms of their context. While the main focus of the conference
will be on the South African context, other proposals will also be
considered.

THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS 30 NOVEMBER 1998.

2	Paper sessions

Papers for ordinary sessions should be 20 minutes in length, with 10
minutes for discussion.

3	Workshops

A number of workshops will also be run. Participants wishing to put
together a workshop, please contact the organizers.

4	Posters

Proposals for posters will also be accepted.

5	Format for submission

Please submit an abstract of 150 words in electronic format (Word format
or text format).6	Address for submission

speaker will be Willie van Peer, and confirmed plenary speakers are Mick
Short, Roger Sell, Paul Simpson, Vimala Herman, Lekan Oyegoke
(Swaziland), Andries Oliphant (Pretoria).

27-18-2991562). Programme information co-ordinated by Dr. Ina Biermann,
Dept of Literary Theory, University of South Africa, PO Box 392, 0001

How to get here: The closest international airport is Johannesburg
International Airport. Transport (free of charge) will be provided to
and from the Airport. Intrepid travellers could rent a car from the
Airport and be independent travel-wise.

9	Special features

Free accommodation and registration waiver for bona fide post-graduate
students.
Accommodation in pleasant guest houses and hotel.
Attractive accompanying persons* programme
Post-conference outing to the Pilanesberg Game Reserve.
Two-day post-conference tour to Pilanesberg Game Reserve - home to the
Big Five, and set in a volcanic crater with a lovely lake in the centre.
Game drives and night barbecues are a feature of this outing (R700 per
person).
The accompanying persons* programme will include visits to Gold Reef
City (a replica of a mining town from the latter half of the nineteenth
century), all the cultural museums in Potchefstroom (a former capital of
the old South African Republic), and to the Vredefort Dome (the
mountainous remnants of one of the largest meteorite impact craters on
earth - it would be possible to arrange a pre-conference hiking trip
across the Dome).
The conference outing will include a visit to a mampoer distillery
(mampoer is a local firewater made of fruit - with a prodigious impact,
much favoured by the main character in Herman Charles Bosman*s stories),
a game drive and a little gentle rafting on the Vaal River, concluded by
a braai (barbecue) on the banks of the Vaal River.
The current exchange rate, which will not in all probability change much
(except to get worse for the Rand) makes this a very viable excursion.
At present the exchange rate is about R9,60 to the pound and about R5,80
to the dollar. The average guest house would thus be about 15-20 per
night (B&B).

10	Conference fee and other costs

Registration (this will include all teas, lunches and documentation):
R430,00 (which translates to about 45 pounds)

Hotel in town (free transport to be provided to venue)	R175,00 B&B
(new price negotiated with hotel)
University guest house (on campus, pretty basic, but clean and pleasant

Registration fee: R430,00. This covers all paperwork, teas, luncheons
and receptions and the conference excursion. Registration for
accompanying persons is the same, and will cover the excursions

institutional affiliation, name of accompanying person, if any, and
indicating level of accommodation required. A registration form will be
e-mailed as soon as provisional registration is done.
