The Department of Psychology at the University of South Carolina plans
to fill three tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant or
Associate Professor in the following areas:

(1) COGNITIVE psychology.  We are looking for candidates whose
research and teaching will contribute to graduate training in
cognitive psychology and intersect with the department's developing
research focus areas in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience or
Reading and Related Processes.

(2) QUANTITATIVE psychology with specific interests in either
longitudinal methods, hierarchical linear modeling or structural
equation modeling.  The successful candidate should have a substantive
area of research that would contribute to one of the department's
research focus areas (1) Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience, (2)
Measurement and Evaluation, (3) Prevention Science, (4) Reading and
Related Processes, and (5) Relationship Processes, and expect to make
significant contributions to both basic and advanced quantitative
training at the graduate level.

(3) SCHOOL or EDUCATIONAL psychology.  The successful candidate's
research and teaching will contribute to graduate training in our
nationally ranked doctoral program in school psychology.  The
department has particular interest in candidates who bring experience
and expertise in the area of instructional interventions (e.g.,
instructional design, aptitude-treatment interactions, effect of
schools and classes on learning, cognitive strategies, and
motivation).  The ideal candidate's research activity would intersect
with one of the department's research focus areas which include
Reading and Related Processes, Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience,
Prevention Science, Measurement and Evaluation, and Relationship
Processes.  Candidates for this position must be eligible for South
Carolina certification and/or licensure in school psychology.

All applicants at the assistant professor level should demonstrate
strong promise as research scholars.  Candidates for appointment at
the associate professor level should have a demonstrated record of
scholarship and funded research.  All applicants should send a vita,
three letters of reference, and copies of at least two reprints or
preprints to the relevant search committee chair c/o Department of
Psychology, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC 29208-0182.

Senior Project Assistant

SRI STAR (Speech Technology and Research) Laboratory in the San
Francisco area has an immediate opening for a Senior Project Assistant
under the direction of the Data Collection Manager. This position
requires a dynamic individual who is a self-starter and will be able
to work well independently with minimal supervision. Primary
responsibilities include setting up the infrastructure for subject
recruitment and selection, supervising all recruitment activities,
recording the speech of children (9 to 14 years of age), briefing and
debriefing subjects, and maintaining collected data.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have excellent organizational,
problem-solving, and communication skills and be computer literate.
Experience working with children and adults in an educational or
research setting is also desirable. Bachelor's degree or work
experience in a field emphasizing the study of human populations or
speech science (e.g., Psychology, Speech & Hearing Sciences, or
Education) is preferred, but not required. This is a temporary
full-time position from approximately September 15, 1998 to March 15,
1999. Salary will be commensurate with experience ($24.00 - $30.00 per
hour).
